  • Fits rear with no issues.
Test fit on front while stationary and we were able to turn full left to full right with no apparent issues.
Uh, yeah, people have already let us know that size fits.

NOTE: info intended for 2015-2019 single rear wheel Transit 150-250-350. I don't have info about the clearance on 2020+ Transit vans (I assume it hasn't changed, but I don't know for sure)

List to date, 7/19/2021

Stock size:
235/65/16, no modifications needed, fits in spare tire mount (28")

225/75R16, no modifications needed, fits in spare tire mount (29.3")

245/70R16, no modifications needed, fits in spare tire mount (29.5")

255/70R16, no modifications needed, MAY fit spare tire mount; some say yes, others say no (30.1")

215/85R16, no modifications needed (30.4)

245/75r16, no modifications needed, no info on spare tire mount (some report modifications needed)(spare fits on 2020 with deflation) (30.5")

265/70r16, modifications needed, using 3" lift, no info on spare tire mount (30.6")

265/75r16, modifications needed, no info on spare tire mount (31.6")

235/85R16, modifications needed, does not fit spare tire mount (31.7")

(modifications = cutting or removing part of body or trim, adding a lift kit, adding wheel spacers)
(note: load rating depends on brand and model of tire, sizes will be the same regardless of brand in most cases, so I did not include the load rating or brand in the summary)
(note: info shared on this list is from forum members, and it's accuracy is only as good as their word)

I am getting ready to purchase tires and want to ask if there is any updated data on the fit for the AWD and any differences noted? Also when discussing the spare tire mount clearance, is there a difference between the 148 EL vs the 148 for fit?
I have a 148 (not EL) with a 2” Q-Lift, waiting on Method 703’s and wanting 245/75/16 Coopers.

No, no real difference between AWD and RWD. Those will fit just fine. Extended vans can fit pretty much any size spare under the van no problem. With a non extended, you can barely fit an Aired down 245/75r16 tire underneath if you pull it away from the rear differential with a strap.

there is no change in the wheel fitment clearance for 2015-2022 vans.

I think I need to add a disclaimer saying these stats and specs are for single rear wheel, 2015-2020 Transits. I have no idea what is going on with the 2021+ Transits, other than some have 6 lug nuts instead of 5.

Caveat: I don't own a Transit yet. But of course that means I've been reading threads and watching videos like crazy. I can say with reasonable confidence that YES, there is quite a bit more room for the spare on the extended. That is more room between the aft end of the differential "pumpkin" and the spare location.

This I'm slightly less confident on, but think is true: People with a 148" non-extended who mount 245/75-16's have to use a ratchet strap to pull the spare aft to keep it away from the pumpkin, but even then it is very close. And I think I read of a couple people who had done that hitting the spare on off-pavement roads or even knocking it down from the holder-upper. I have begun to think that if I get a van (would be 148" non-extended) and want to go 245/75-16 that I'd want to put the spare on the rear door (which comes with it's own potential issues of course).

The preceding paragraph may only apply to certain "models" of 245/75-16 because it seems like they are all a bit different, even in the same nominal size.

I believe it's the SRW AWD, and the SRW RWD with heavy duty front axle that get the 6-lug wheels all around. SRW RWD without heavy duty front axle gets the 5-lug wheels. (And then of course duallys get their own dually wheels all around.)

Thanks, that is my concern with that spare tire. I don’t want the spare on the rear door and am considering the deflated option but not too excited about it. I have had conversations with builders that say it works with some modifications but I may go to the 255/70/16 to get a little more room but the extra width brings other possible issues. Anyone have info about that size?

I finally decided that the rear door spare tire mount is the way to go. Ordered the Aluminess mount and should be installing it next month when I swap wheels and tires. (I will have 4 black OEM wheels, 6 bolt, with the lovely caps and 4 tires with about 11,000 mi. PM me if you are interested.) Now I need to replan my bike racks.

I am curious if anyone has verified if the 255/70/16 (30.1") fits into the standard 148" wheelbase spare tire mount. Surly Bill has done a great job on this thread, and I have read all of it but have not seen any verification of it fitting. I am old and do not like to crawl under the car to do the ratchet strap thing and would rather go to the 245/75/16 with a hitch tire mount if the 255/70/16 doesn't fit.
thanks

Did you read post #49?

With Load Rating requirements (Load E Needed) for my HR EXT 350 SRW and max tire size desired. I see a lot of focus on the BF Goodrich KO 245/75/15's as a best option. But as noted in the quote below, stepping down one size in aspect ratio from 75 to 70 eliminates having to bend back pinch welds and deal with other tire interference.

But when going from 75 to 70 Load E options become limited. There are two choices however. The Yokohama Geolander A/T G015 and the Cooper Discloverer AT3 LT listed below. While this isn't the max tire size, it seems like the largest size without mods. Plus it would likely fit in the spare wheel well of the non extended vans.

The Yokohama looks more road oriented while the Cooper looks more off road oriented. While I only have 10k miles on my stockers, I think at this point I would likely pull the trigger on the Yokohama's in the 245/70/16 size on the stock rims, but have yet to read any reviews. Not quite sure why, when this looks like a good option?

Did you read post #1 before posting? I'll wait until all the discussion dies down before updating the thread. Again.
