Update on my van and now my Real life experience that confirms my reading observations.

245/70R16 on 16x7.5"
Cooper AT3 LT, E rated on Black Rhino Havasu rims.
No rub. No trimming, same size tire fits in spare tire location on stock spare 16" steel wheel Seriously smooths out the ride.More stable.Looks better.

245/70R16 spare tire on stock steel wheel also means I have 5 same size tires.

No regrets with no modding, for a better ride, and better looking ride!

Great looking combination!

I ran some numbers and hoping someone can confirm/correct the results - comparing the above Black Rhino Havasu (16x7.5, 45mm offset) to Ultra 450 Toil (16x6.5, 45mm offset):
  1. Rhino / Toil backspace is 6.02 / 5.52 - therefor the Rhino will be 1/2" closer to the front strut. But this doesn't seem to be a problem (with a 245mm tire anyway).
  2. Rhino is 1" wider - therefore the Rhino will stickout from the van 1/2" more than the Toil.
Anyone know the stock Al. wheel offset? I've seached but found nothing. Does the Toil stickout further than stock Al. wheels?

Yea... I’m a day away on whether to buy a van or not; absolutely what to use your combo. I wanna be clear tho, your van is NOT lifted correct? I don’t plan to lift mine till late fall or spring, but really wanna ditch the stock wheels...

245/70r16 is only 1.5" taller than stock (.75" more ground clearance) and slightly wider width, so there shouldn't be any problems with clearance. Another common size that works great is 225/75r16; 1.3" taller than stock, narrower width. If I don't find another cheap/free set of take-off stock tires next year, I'll probably get the 225's.

Thx for such a quick response... by lifted I meant; you didn’t modify the stock suspension? is the van still at it OE height; you didn’t modify the van to fit the tires???

That size tire fits without a lift.

Will do!!
I'm price shopping for the same tires, and rims; let me know what you find please, 'cause they are so expensive, and that money was going to my solar panels ;_;
ok so I should be getting my van this week... decided in the short term to run the black factory wheels w/ larger AT tires. unless I’m reading it wrong this combo, OE steel wheels & tires should work. Especially since I decided to run General AT2 235/70/16(closer to stock) instead of the larger 245/75/16. I’ve run Generals before and they’re also on my wife’s Jeep; just not familiar enough w/ the Cooper tires. this project will take time; for the cost of the wheels I can get the interior started!

The stock wheels are 6.5J 16 ET60 5x160. ET60 is the offset.

245 75 16 will fit on the stock rims and provide 1" additional ride height over stock but they will nit fit cleanly into the stock spare location.

You should really consider the load rating of the tires. Any reputable tire store would not sell this particular General for use on a Transit. Limit your search to load E rated tires or the European equivalent (3000ish lbs per tire). Many LT 245/74r16 load E tires would work IF they fit. Cooper 245/70r16 load E tires are under-rated but have some history of success. Even load E-rated 225/75r16 tires will not provide the mileage you expect, since they are rated for maybe 2500ish lbs/tire vs the 3000 lbs/tire spec. Your suggested Generals are WAAY too weak for the Transit requirements. Nothing’s against General, just that particular tire is not beefy enough.

Son of a... I know I checked & compared the load rating? Maybe the numbers got all jumbled in my head, thx for the heads up... I’ll take a look at the numbers again!

Well, it’s also possible that Tirerack just doesn’t list the LT version of that tire, so I jumped on you based on their info. That said, I’ve been watching tire availability for 4 years, and have never seen tires with ~3000 lb load rating in something larger than 225/75r16, but smaller than 245/75r16, except for the Cooper AT3. So I wish you had been right.

yea... looks like you are write! so I’m gonna jump to 245/75R/16; so it’ll either be General AT/X or the Cooper AT3...

Installed the Cooper AT3 245/70/16 a few weeks ago, first HW trip this weekend. No trimming required (my area uses a lot of road salt). Ride quality much improved over stock tires, even at high pressure than I ran on Conti's, need to play with pressure a bit to tune the ride when the van is mostly empty. Road noise increase not noticeable. Roughly 1-2 MPG hit, spedo off by 3-4 MPH, mostly due to AT and not the diameter I think. Shifts more, but not too much, not gear hunting at any speed. Feels like the engine boggs more prior to a downshift, with the 3.7L I'm not sure I'd want bigger AT tires without a final drive ratio change. A little more body roll with the taller/softer side walls, but the ride is SO much better - felt every crack in the road with the Conti's. Tracting MUCH improved, even rolling onto the leveling blocks is easier, diameter and tracking both helping. And most importantly... they look bad ass with the Ultra Toil wheels on a MR LWB (passenger wagon / basic weekend camper). I was convinced I'd want a lift, but now not sure, very proportional looking.

Nice! I think the 245/70/16 are the best fit aesthetically - big but not too stuffed in the wheel well.

I wish Goodyear made Duratracs in that size, I'm hoping the 245/75/16s will fit all right when they arrive.
