Following along as this is definitely a future project. Interested to see if anyone has made a rack from 8020 using these 👀
I made enough of a rack with 8020 to hang my box from. I considered doing a full frame but I wasn't sure if I'd need it and didn't want to cut down another long length for no reason. I will be easy enough to do in the future if I find a use. I just need to swap out the short extrusion with a full length and move the cross pieces up/down, maybe adding a few extra.

I apologize to everyone that is waiting on passenger side. This has become a low priority for me recently because of other life events but I think I’ll be able to make time for it shortly. The hinge part is mostly the same but I need to pick a design and test it for the center latch area.

I'm interested if you could PM me please. Also really interested in passenger side as I'm considering my mini split there.
Sending a PM

These work well, the install was pretty easy. The hardest part is getting them over the hinges themselves. I used some aluminum extrusion to build the frame then mounted an underbody box to it. WAY cheaper than some of the turnkey solutions I could find. It'll be nice getting some of the outdoor stuff out of the van.

Ohhh man, that "not all who wander are lost... I missed the f-ing exit" really made me laugh.
Thanks!!! :)

That was actually the worst part of the install, I had to remove that. The box covers the lower part of the window obscuring the "Not all who wander are lost" part. Once it warms up I'll apply a new one at the top of the window.

I finally got around to building out a frame with 8020 and then mounted some 1up bike racks to it. It works well overall but I still need to test it on the road; and then off road.

Hardest part was dealing with the curve of the lower part of the door. You can't mount a rack straight across, as it hits the door. The rack either needs to curve or you need to add some sort of extender from the hinge bracket.

Your rack looks good!
What size 8020 did you use? What do you mean you needed an extender from the bracket? It looks like you built it pretty much how I intended, straight across just below the middle bracket. Then it avoids the weird bulge ford made it with, then a vertical piece can be placed on to and it should clear.

I used 1515, seems sturdy enough for bikes and not overly heavy.

I was hoping to have a crossbar lower down for support but didn't consider the bulge on the lower part of the door. I think it's gonna be fine though. There's maybe a touch more flex than I'd like at the top on the passenger side.

The bulge was difficult, I wanted it to be flat mounted so more people could build it without needing to bend tube. If I wanted the cross bar lower, the mounts would have had to stick out a lot from the door, that would have been ugly and cost more. I’m happy with my choice

I think it worked out well, considering the limitations. I just didn't realize the impact of that bulge until I was putting the rack together.

I very much appreciate your work designing the brackets and would buy a passenger side set in a heartbeat.

Any chance you can post a few photos of details on how the 8020 is mounted to the brackets? TIA

I can try to get photos, but it's tight back there!

I slid some 5/16" carriage bolts into the slot in the extruded aluminum, aligned the bolts with the holes in the brackets, then tightened down with a washer and lock nut. The carriage bolts were 1" long and I think I could've gone down to 3/4" or even maybe 1/2".

Thanks. Don't sweat the photos. Description is clear. Sounds simple enough .. and of course makes total obvious sense now that you explained it. :)

I've now tested my rack!

We took the rack and bikes on a 4 hour road trip, including about 10 dirt miles to get to a camp site. The bikes stayed on there and never really felt in any danger of falling off. With that said, there was quite a bit of movement, I think due to the lack of support in the upper-passenger side corner of the rack. The bikes probably put extra stress on the rack compared to mounting something lower down.

I'd like to find a way to mount this upper corner to the van for added stability, but it's not absolutely essential.

Passenger side brackets are almost ready to sell!
I finally had time to finished the design for passenger side brackets and had a demo set fabricated. They fit well and I ordered a batch to sell, should be available some time after July 10th.

More to come but these are demo and unpainted, others will be black. Also my welder is broken so no rack yet 😒

Put me on the wait-list for a set of those passenger side brackets!

You’re already on it, I was planning to message you and everyone else that bought driver’s side brackets when I have them available.
Also a heads up, the passenger side is going to cost a little more since it’s 4 brackets. The latch that the middle bracket mounts to is a good amount lower and I thought the twisting force was too much without a 4th bracket

Thanks! No worries on the cost. These things have been awesome so far. Looking forward to adding more capacity!
