Bench Seat Width

Hello All, this is my first post. Yesterday I bought a 2019 350HD LWB Extended Transit. It was supposed to go to an upfitter to be converted into a camper. For some reason it did not and my local dealer bought it at auction. It came with the camper package which means there is NOTHING behind the front seats. The reason for my purchase of this van was to build a camper for my family of 5. I currently own a VW Vanagon Westy but it doesn't have enough seatbelts for my three kids. One of the first things I need to do is get a bench seat. I have seen bench seats in two widths, 55" and 62". Will the 62" seat fit just behind the front seats? With the 62" seat is there a clearance issue getting into the back of the van?

Thanks for the help!

Welcome! The narrower seat gives more room at the door to step into, etc. The wider one is better for larger adults, but does indeed come closer to the door, making it harder to squeeze past it to the back.

We are awaiting production of a 2020 cargo van & like you, first decision is additional seating (grandchildren, so it would be used sporadically). I'm leaning toward a 36" bench but thinking about layout in case I wanted to add more seating in the future. My understanding from other posts is that the brackets for removable seats also fit if you spin the seat around, so you could make a dining area with 2 benches facing each other. Also, could remove one or both when not needed and not as heavy as long bench. Also from other posts, I believe the crew van was only available with a 62" bench & some are swapping in out for a 36" (which also works with the bracket placement from the 62"), so you may find some crew buyers selling a 62" seat.

Our grandsons love that setup and call it our van living room. They often ask to sit out in the driveway and hang out.

We have two girls, 4.5yr and 3yrs. With a 55” bench seat in the second row we can just barely squeeze into the back with the side door closed. This is especially tight with two car seats. Anything wider than this would be a squeeze. I’m anxious to move to a 36” bench, but the kids nap better when they are separated by a middle seat.

62" three seater bench is designed for the first row behind the driver. The sliding door leaves a wide enough opening where you can walk forward on the right side of that opening and sit in that 62" bench. You can also walk to the left side of the opening and go to the back. My buddy is 6'3 and 260 and has no issue walking pass the 62" bench to get to the back.

That is an RCA 24" full HDTV with built in DVD. Later today I am installing a BluRay player under the passenger seat to connect via HDMI and also a Vizio sound bar connected via Digital sound port. (you don't get those connections or that picture on most 12v TVs).

The mount is a fairly inexpensive but sturdy wall mount (I think Monoprice?) attached to the pillar behind the driver and held to the headrest with a short rubber bungee. It has worked well for years in two different LR wagons like that. I put a short 1x4 spacer on the pillar behind the trim.
