Greetings,

I'm in the beginning research phase of a _van version two_ and looking specifically at the Promaster or Transit LWB EB Vans as posibilities for a DIY RV use conversion.

Right now my wife and i have a nice 2010 chevy AWD van we've converted.

My reason for replying to this thread was to share two tid bits on awning style windows and also roof fans.

Awning style windows...
We live full time in a 38ft Mobile Suite 5th wheel that has Hehr awning windows on all sides. We also tow a small 15 foot fiberglass travel trailer behind our van conversion and the trailer also has Hehr awning style windows. There website is: Hehr International . WE OVE THEM!!!! They allow us to open the windows in driving rain without any water egress into rigs. And they are available in dual pane which is nice in all temps.

On Roof vents...
Go with the MaxxFan if you have the chance. Our small travel trailer and van have the MaxxFan 5200 and it is great to be able to open the vent in driving rain without any moisture entereing the rig. ALSO, the MaxxFan has a 10 speed fan, the Fantastic Fan has only a 3 speed. The variety of speeds is nice to have. We will not go back to a FF after using the MF in our rigs.

Cheers,
Thom
Which model of Hehr window do you have?

Hi, i believe our windows are the 6400 model (ours have a 50/50 hrizontal split design. The rear one on the small trailer is also an egress window but looks identical to non-egress. And those in the 5th wheel are also dual pane.

I don't believe Hehr makes awning windows that fit vans, only sliders.
And one question about the Maxxair .........how high above the roofline does it extend?

Nice van, and went thru your link, Can I ask about fuel mileage? on your trips...
Greetings, Thanks for the VanKudos :)

Well...the milage varies. The van is my wife's daily driver on her ~10 mile round trip commute. In town the math shows about 13mpg.

Now on the road with full load in van (about 7k at scales) we will see about 15 to 16mpg... IF we are pulling the 2300lb at scales travel trailer this will drop to about 12-13mpg. Those are figures from this season's trips so far.

On _speed_?? Yea this van really surprises those we pass on the roadways. This is no granny van. It will easily pass going uphill from 55mph up to over 65+ in no time and no sweat from rig. Ours has the 5.3L v8 with auto and full time/automatic AWD. It will easily travel the muddy/rocky backroads and forestry trails of our Pacific Northwest (we both come from 4WD families and now prefer the practicality of AWD for our adventures and daily use.)

Cheers,
Thom

On the Hehr and vans, things might have changed since our DIY van project began in fall of 2010 but they stated then that if we give them a template they will make a window and trim to fit.

On the Maxxair MaxxFan 5200 the vent when down is about 6" above roof, and double that when open. The vent honestly looks nicer down than the FF down. It just looks more _right_ to me (and my wife...<<<and trust me when i say that was the real reason i swapped the fans out on "Her" van!)

I had the flat rather than dome smoke lids on my two Fantastic Fans and they fit in nicely with my stealth concept in the Sprinter.. Then again even at medium height in a Transit nobody will really see the Maxxair's unless they are on the second floor of a building or house overlooking my chosen spot for the night, and they would easily detect my flat Fantastics as well. I'll keep them under consideration.

Hi Folks,

Has anyone come across (or made) some CAD drawings for the North American Transit? I'm not looking for fancy-schmancy 3D. Just some good old plan and elevation drawings. And if beggars can be choosers, I'm looking for the Medium Roof Long version :)

Thanks.

Good find miked,

The SM home page now has the Transit on the top menu, which leads here:

Sportsmobile Custom Camper Vans - Ford Transit Vans Info

At the bottom of this page are further links, including various comparison between different mfg. vans, and good summary of the dimensions and different models.

The Flow Plan menu choices at the top of the home page seem to indicate that the Transit is going to be ready for pop up roofs etc..

For example:

http://www.sportsmobile.com/flow-chart-ordering/

PS enter "Ford Transit" in the SM search box at the top right, to open up lots of plans and options in the works apparently.

Regarding the Transit grids on the Sportsmobile site that Miked linked, I think the lengths are incorrect. The short wheelbase gives a conversion length of 121 inches plus 7 additional inches in the back and about what looks like 14 or so inches in the front. The floor length on the 130 WB is 126 inches, so the numbers don't add up. I think the long wheel base grids may also have incorrect lengths. Can anybody verify those lengths?

JAD, SportsMobile seems to be in the early stages of migrating old Sprinter documentation to the Transit area of its site. I would take everything with a grain of salt, and contact SM with questions. Note that the photos in the Transit pages in the sub-folders I described earlier are mostly Sprinter photos.

I have two 2D CAD drawings of a 148" not extended high roof. 90% correct. Will complete after van arrives in January (I hope).
I would post what I have except this forum does not allow me to do that due to their limitations on file size.
you never happened to finish these drawings, did you dave?

2D drawings are being done and corrected as I proceed with the build. When done all phases of the build will be documented. Completed drawing are for the floor and air vent install. Lots of drawings done but will be corrected after build. In future the drawings will be posted on the new build website: www.ortontransit.info

I have begun a SketchUp version of my furniture, to be built out of plywood, aluminium channel and angle. I started by building dynamic components for these four items and then using them as subcomponents in a couple component panels that make up the walls and shelves in the furniture. Then I would create the furniture and then put it in a space representing the van.

The problem with SketchUp is that it is a nuisance to specify how the subcomponents stick together when the component shelf is resized (see their fence example under dynamic components). For my purpose this approach does not provide sufficient pay back, though the attached details do help me visualize and choose material sizes.

I will model the furniture using SketchUp, but will use a flat brown rectangle with aluminium coloured edges for each panel (more art like, less CAD like).

Have now completed the Maxxair roof fan install and the 300 watt single solar panel so those drawings are also complete.

A friend Norm Brown is doing the web site. The completed drawings will be posted soon at www.ortontransit.info

If you have a need, I can email a .dwg AutoCAD file.

Bump!
Anyone found some 3D CAD files yet?

Found on Ford website:

Q2: Can I get CAD files of Ford vehicles or components?

A2: Available by request through the Ford Body Builders Advisory Service are 3-D CAD files on a CD-ROM of E-Series, F-150, and F-250/350/450/550 trucks in IGES format. All vehicle component drawings or CAD requests will be handled on an individual basis. It is required to specify, in order of priority, what parts of the vehicle are of interest. CAD Data requests for the complete vehicle will not be processed. Use e-mail: bbasqa@ford.com, to order the E & F-Series 3D CAD data on a CD-ROM. Include your return mailing address, contact, and phone number.

Who's willing to give it a try??

I found it. If it's could help someone.
