I thought the same but my brother in law has a 2017 with a u-joint fix and also a pinion damper. He doesn't have any vibration etc (not saying the damper is or isn't the reason).
I believe that you had the LK4Z-4A263-C Torsional Damper Kit installed right? see attachment, If so I think the pinon nose damper would be a step down.

Ok I see what you are saying. If that is the case then the Torsional Damper Kit didn't fix my issue. They are replacing the clutch packs next week which I dont think will matter but it will hopefully solve the groan noise when making parking lot maneuvers.

How many miles on your van?

The reason I asked was because my van was very noisy when new, like I have said before I changed the differential Gear oil with Redline 75w/110 at about 3000 miles, it helped a little, added the nose damper at about 15,000 again it helped a little. now at 22,000 and the noise level is not to bad, 70 mph and up it starts to get a little noisy, (it's all subjective), The point I am trying to make, is that in my case at least, the noise seems to diminish as the mile's accumulate. at 9200 mile's mine was still quite noisy, if it's the same as mine it should mellow with age. I was hopping the "Torsional Damper Kit" that you had installed was the cure.

Yeah its hard because everyone hears and sees things differently and noises, vibrations etc are very subjective. My issue is from 45-60 mph I hear a pulsing hum like the windows open in the back or a subwoofer whenever i let off the gas. If i accelerate I dont hear it. If i accelerate very softly then I will hear it but again its always when coasting from 60mph and goes away after it gets below 45mph. Time will tell but perhaps its even exhaust related.

Mine has made this noise at Hwy speeds since it was brand new. The first trip I made I as checking the differential temperature every 50 miles by putting my hand on it, It never got more then slightly warm.
The Dealer did not know anything and then I put a big roof rack on that makes a ton of noise.
I just wrote it off as Unibody Harmonics, Military Hmmwv Unibody's are so loud that you have to wear hearing protectors.

When I coast from 50mph to 40 mph there is a definite gear whine noise, been there since new, is a lot less pronounced now. I don't get the pulsing hum like the windows open sound though. When it was new, I could very clearly hear that it was drive line related (differential) now that the noise is less pronounced, it blends in with all the other noise.

You might find this video informative, starting at 24:30 is the Booming noise.

Hello all, I have a 3.5 EB, HR - my van has a vibration and humming noise that we can not seem to locate. The vibration seems constant and can be felt even at idle when in gear, the noise appears most evident at speeds of 65-95 km, and frequency changes with speed We have balanced tires, tried a new set of tires, nothing changed. I drove another Transit on dealers lot it actually did the same thing. Does anyone else have this issue? The noise is more annoying then the vibration it really sounds like a bad belt in tire but it is not as we tested for that. Any feedback would be appreciated.
Had same kind of issue, long story short, added XL3 additive to tranny, problem solved..

Dropped off the van today so they could replace the clutches for the LSD as those were faulty. Got that groaning noise when making parking lot maneuvers. They are also evaluating where I am getting my thrum noise. The shop foreman rode with me and when he heard the noise bw 45-60mph and while coasting, he said it was booming caused by the body panels resonating and the amount of dead space in the van.

While I dont necessarily disagree with this, something is causing it. I said that the vibration or harmonics are still being caused by something out of balance or round etc. There are some good guys there so I trust they will genuinely try to find the issue. Will report back in a few days.

Update: They didn't replace the LSD clutches that were making the groaning sound when making sharp turns. They just put in 2qts of friction modifier and that was the fix. No more groaning. But I still have thrumming and booming noise bw 45-60mph mainly when decelerating. They did the TSB for the torsional damper but I don't feel that it did anything at all unfortunately.

They also checked the driveshaft and ujoints which all came back within spec. So I guess I am just stuck with it. I may try to rotate the tires and see if that helps. The last option would be to install that pinion damper which may help. I just have to see if it still fits in properly now that the torsion damper shield is bolted in there.

If you order the Pinion nose damper, order under part number JK4Z-5A669-A which is the damper with bolts (damper kit) if you order the damper and bolts individually the price is much higher, the damper kit is mentioned in Safety Recall 17S15.

Thanks @kazuo!

Damper kit LK4Z-4A263-C installed, The volume of the vibration is down to a comfortable hum which does not interfere with normal conversation. The noise is still at the 120km/h - 70mph but much improved. Ford covered it under warranty and the dealer installed it during a scheduled service in no time at all.

I would like to weight in with my experience with this issue. I bought my van with ~170,000 miles on it. When I first got it, there was a thrum or grinding like noise that would happen intermittently. We replaced the ring gear in the rear end, and that took care of some of it. I was then only experiencing the noise described in this thread.
A couple of weeks ago, I had the transmission flushed, and that has taken care of the rumble with the RPM shudder. I have driven it a few thousand miles since then without the issue occouring. I would advise anyone who is having this issue to first try a transmission flush, instead of a TC replacement. It is much cheaper and may very well solve the problem.

Thanks for sharing. It seems the torque converter adjustment/fit can be touchy in our vans and other vehicles, and more often than not when someone shares a definitive solution rather than conjecture, the hum/thrum/vibration/shudder was related to the TC. Some have it replaced, some use one of the additives, and now you share flushing the fluid.

Or 2018 has less than 500 miles on the 36k warranty left and occasionally has a slight shudder/thrum. It will be taken to the dealer to see what they do or not. It came with the factory U-joints rather than Giubo and also a pinion damper, so those two anecdotal guesses are not the issue.

I definitely agree and as long as it is under warranty, I would push for a full TC/transmission replacement. For those who are out of warranty though, I would say try the cheaper flush before replacing the TC.

There seems to be quite a few vibration issues with these vans from the TC shudder, driveshaft coupling, and the rear end. Everyone should read the symptoms of each and compare to their own noises, but there has been enough information in these threads to pinpoint each of the causes.
