The SBM message was appearing on my 2017 Passenger XLT. My battery has been dying on a regular basis and I had been chalking it up to the doors being open when I worked on it (despite turning off all the cabin lights).

  • My main issue was slow turnover on a daily basis.
  • At one point nothing would turn on, no lights, alarm didn’t work, etc.

The Ford dealer had the van and looked for a parasitic draw and the first day they had it (on a Friday) they found a 16amp draw after it was shutdown. By that Monday it was 3amp and by the next day it was normal. And then normal the next. I picked it up with no resolution.

Yesterday the van had a slow turnover and decided to take it over to Autozone to test the battery. Assuming that the dealer would have done that, does not seem like that was the case. There prognosis was one of the cells in the battery was bad.

Replaced the battery and the SBM error is not appearing. The jury is still out. I’ll post again in a little clip to see if this worked. Assuming it’s either the battery or the drawn down over and over killed the battery. Will continue to monitor.

Not calling this resolved, but will update as this continues. Hoping this helps others that may be having a similar issue.

I get this same message every time I start my van. But it's because my seat belt reminder is unplugged on dam purpose lol
I got this message a bunch in Feb/Mar 2022 and took my 2019 E-150 van to the dealer. He "reset" the BeltMinder software. Now, exactly 1 year later, it's happening again. Nothing has been disconnected, it just doesn't work properly. I called the dealer who reset it a year ago and the service writer had no idea. He tried to get in touch with a technician so I could discuss it. The technician was apparently not available and was to call me back that afternoon. You guessed it, no call.

Did this resolve the issue? I’ve had my 2016 T250 for five years and never a problem until yesterday when the service beltminder light came on -but not every time I started it. It does seem to have an unusual delay in starting. I don’t want to dance around with the service department at the dealership in a new state where I just recently moved to so I think I’ll just go right to replacing the battery.
