Very excited about installing my new steering wheel this weekend. Wish me luck on the install, I’m reasonably certain I can do it. Will post pictures once it’s installed.

Not my cup of tea, but the flattish looking bottom might help when trying to slide from the driver's seat to the rear and back.

Not my cup of tea,
It's not for everyone. Our van is pretty different from most other builds on here. We had very specific goals in mind around aesthetic vs. just hitting form and function. Really trying to blend travel van with lux feel, but not too lux if that makes any sense. Plus it's a mountain bike hauler first, so I guess we're really all over the place. But, that's why we love her! That, and I love driving a van now.

It's a factory Ford wheel so all functionality works. I bought a replacement wheel from Ford.com parts and shipped it to the UK to have the modifications. The group who did the work is Royal Steering Wheel in Aylesburry. They have tons of experience with mods including with Transits. I probably spent more than I should have, but it's worth it for what I wanted to get looks and function wise.

Amazing. You're not far off from this guy, below. Even has a face mask on lol. The UK loves its transits.

Do you think I could get a wheel here in the UK, have it done by them, and it would fit my on-order transit back in the US? Or is the wiring different, and that's why ya had to ship one to the UK and back?

I talked to the guys at Royal about sourcing a wheel from them and they didn't have the ability being such a small shop. I don't know much about which wheels work on UK spec'd Transits. I can tell you visibly they look the same as our steering wheels. There have to be places in the US which could do the same thing I did, I just didn't find any advertising. You could always go on Ford.com and get a replacement shipped to you and then road trip it to these guys. You'd only have shipping to the UK one way.

is the wheel heated? What was the cost if you don't mind?
Not heated unfortunately. These guys just did the cosmetic work. All functionality remains full factory. They charged £240.

love the black out wheels. Just get some dark tint going on those windows, will look sublime!
Thanks, I'm loving the blacked out wheels as well. I actually have the front windows tinted, they're just rolled down in this picture. The rear windows are the factory privacy windows.

Here is one that is remanufactured for the Mk8 Transit. It appears to have the same buttons and side pods like our steering wheels. Probably would be a direct fit on our Transits.

The OP's steering wheel appears to be based on a Transit Fiesta MK7 steering wheel based on the steering wheel controls. They probably have to do some modifications to the connectors and perhaps do something if the resistance values are different on the switches.

I bought a direct replacement from Ford.com using the VIN to my van. So there was no modifications to any of the wiring.

Another thing they changed in the 2020 models versus the older vans. I am stuck in the past because I own a 2017, so I tend to focus on my version most of the time.

This implies to me that for older vans, the one I posted probably would work.

Make sure you look through the options though. Some vans have the distance cruise control and other buttons, so there are several configurations to choose from.

All installed, was really pretty easy. For anyone interested, here are the steps I took:

  • Parts/Tools Needed:
    • Steering Wheel replacement
    • 1/4" ratchet - 7MM (I think) for negative battery terminal
    • 1/2" 24MM Socket for wheel nut
    • 1/2" Torque wrench
    • Blue thread lock
  • Remove negative battery terminal
  • Test to ensure battery is disconnected
  • Wait 5 minutes or so before working on the airbag (I don't know if this is required, I heard some say you don't need to disconnect the battery and others say disconnect and wait multiple hours)
  • Turn wheel 90 degrees to expose the back of the steering wheel
  • Insert a small regular screwdriver into the back of the wheel to pry the airbag clip up. It will push from the inner part of the wheel outward. There are clips on both sides of the wheel, so I unclipped the first and then turned the wheel to unclip the second.
  • Carefully pry out the airbag -- but don't pull hard
  • I'd suggest taking pictures at this point so you have reference
  • There are three wires attached (in my case) from the airbag to the wheel
  • Remove the two (brown and white) thin wires attached to the airbag - they just pull out
  • Flip up the yellow tab on the center wire and remove the last wire. It has a tab to lift up and pull away.
  • Remove airbag and set aside.
  • Center wheel in van
  • Insert 24MM socket and remove the wheel bolt - you may need to use your legs to stabilize the wheel absorbing the torque
  • Carefully remove the wiring loom attaching the wheel to the clock spring
  • Remove old wheel
  • Refit new wheel
  • Reattach steering wheel wiring loom to the clock spring
  • Re-insert steering wheel bolt and re-torque. I couldn't find exact specs, but did find a reference online to between 45 and 55 lb ft. So I used this - ~61NM
  • Reattach thin white/brown wires and yellow airbag wire
  • Carefully re-insert airbag and give a light push on each side until you hear two clicks. The airbag should be re-engaged.
  • Reconnect battery
  • Hope to **** you did it all right.
  • Test full function of wheel, it's free and clear, no grinding, it turns your wheels left/right when you turn left/right
  • Test button functionality
  • Blow the horn
  • Take for test drive
  • Enjoy!
