Load rating D vs E

So, we’ve just done a VanCompass 2 inch Topo2.0 lift at our dealer. Very happy with the results! But, and why does there always have to be a but, anyway they installed a BFG KO2 size 245/70R16 and here’s the but…in a D rated tire as opposed to the E rated tire we had originally discussed.

I don’t want to go crazy over tires sizes here, just load ratings. The van is a 2022 AWD HR148 Extended. It is built out, 36 gallons of water(not always full when travelling obviously) 4 batteries and full electrical in the back, and I do carry 4 bikes, 2 mountain and 2 gravel, and other gear, paddle boards, climbing stuff, chairs and the usual stuff you’d have in a camper off grid van. Compost toilet and shower as well.

Basically is a D rated tire enough to carry that weight? Or, do I ask them to go back to an E rated tire? I also understand that to get the E rating I need a 255/70R16 tire. Is there much of a visual difference between tire sizes on the van? Will the 255 stick out from the body much more than the 245? Or is it just better to have the E rated tire on than the D?

Sorry for the long drawn out post/question, but the van is ready to be picked up, I just don’t want to accept it unless I’m sure of the tire load rating is enough and it will be safe to drive. They are willing to change the tires, just not sure if I should or not. Also, they are mounted on Black Rino Wheels.

Thanks in advance to any reply's I get! And a bigger thanks to quick reply’s! Haha! I just want my van back, but I want it back right!

Thank you both for the super fast reply’s!

@Farther Ok so the 245/75R16 even with the VanCopmass 2 inch Topo2.0 lift requires some folding of the pinch welds as well as minor trimming of the front bumper, but a 255 does not, at least that is what the dealer is telling me. Is this correct?

@dinocarsfast And the D rated tire is unsafe in which way? I believe I will still be under the weight limit of that tire load capacity?

So, I suppose the 255 E rated tire is the way to go if it fits. Next stupid question, does a 255/70R16 fit?

The D rated tire is significantly under the rating specified for your van. E range is much closer but even in a 255/70R16E the KO2 is still a couple hundred pounds light in weight rating compared to the stock C Euro filment.

The 255/70R16E should fit the wheel arch without modification as long as they are mounted on stock wheels.

Hahaha! @surly Bill i put safety just ahead of looks, not by much, but still ahead! So I decided to go with the 245/75R16 E rated tire.

Thank you to everyone who answered! Much appreciated!

I do have one more question though. I already have the RAS on the van, it drives really well. But now with the lift and taller tires, would you add a sway bar? So many questions eh! Sorry! Haha! Again, appreciate any answers.

If it's driving well as is, maybe go with it for a while. Worth remembering that off-highway stuff generally benefits from NO sway-bar - allowing more rear-axle articulation (in theory).

I wasn't able to keep my stock mud flaps in the front but l kept the wheel well liners with trimming required. I might try the Trail mud flaps since they are a different shape. I've had zero rubbing or issues so far. Yes, I have the shock relocation brackets as well as the new Van Compass control arms.

I have Cooper 245/70/r16 tires installed on my 2015. These are E rated. Mine are not the latest design.

Newer design:

Either they are rated for your vehicle or they're not. In this case not, especially-not because you are fulltime heavy. Wildpeaks look cool and have great off road grip but are basically dangerous due to wandering for the first 1k mi or so and that will probably repeat after a rotation. I didnt rotate mine due to that concern. And they will get LOUD after about 20k mi. Just installed goodyear workhorse AT tires, same $ and 119/121 E ratings as wildpeaks, less aggressive (looking), zero wander. No exper w/ ko's.

Like a few others mentioned you should focus on the 119/121 load INDEX - the C, D, E rating are confusing and not what really matter. However … before my shop ordered our VC lift they asked me to weigh the van fully loaded including front and rear axle weights. This was to ensure the right springs were spec’ed. If you had a light build-out you could POSSIBLY go with a lighter duty tire but it doesn’t sound like the case here. And the shop should not have installed the D tire which seems to be load index 113/110. Not enough. I’d demand the shop swap out the tires for free.

Hey everyone, so we got the van back! We had the E rated tires, size 245/75R16 and they are the BFG KO2’s installed and they feel fine so far. But we’ve only put 50km on so far, tomorrow will be a bigger day. It completely changes the look of the van! We especially love the extra clearance we got!

Thanks to everyone who reply and shared their advice and knowledge! 👍🍻
