So on TDIClub, there has been talk about Gaspods which are an aerodynamic change for vehicles that they claim will improve fuel mileage. I'm skeptical but the price was right so I am going to give them a try. I will be gathering info and putting it in a spreadsheet for a chemical engineer friend to crunch. I won't start the testing with the Gaspods until our van gets broke in. I will give it until May since it should be broke in by then, also we should be out of the Winter fuel by then.

Anyway, I will try to keep up on mileage as we move along.

Will you be doing ABAB testing? Remember that winter temperatures will play havoc with consistent numbers. That is why I will be waiting until Spring. Which do you have?

What do you mean ABAB? I will wait until spring to do some comparison tests but plan to put them on for my 2500 mile trip I have coming up in a couple weeks pulling my Casita trailer. If nothing else I hope they keep the back window clean.

ABAB testing would be when you try with the pods for awhile (A), then without (B), etc. If you just put them on for three months then take them off for three months, then temperature variations and road conditions will have a larger effect on changes in mileage than the pods will. So, you put them on for a week, then take them off for a week. Or on for five tanks then off for five tanks, or whatever works best for your situation. Since we will be running about 2000 miles a week, I will be swapping them weekly.

got my GasPods today. Mounted them to see how they look. Will use them for my upcoming trip but do some testing with and without this summer after it warms up, as Whitedog suggested.

You have the standard 9 pod set-up. I was gifted an extra 4 by the company president since she told me that with the width, it should have 4 more. So, I will be very interested in your numbers.

Also think about running them down the side of the van as well. Not sure what Gas-Pods recommends, but that's the standard for the Air-Tabs, to cover the flat vertical surfaces as well.

I have not seen these before. Much cheaper than AirTabs.
Much cheaper? Really? Seems to be a bit more expensive for the cheapest option, and then gets even more expensive from there.

Adhesive black GasPods - $40 for 9, $4.45 each.
Magnetic black GasPads - $60 for 9, $6.67 each. Add another $30-75 for colors.
Adhesive black or white AirTabs - $2.75 each.

Both install at 4-5" on-center spacing, so the number required is the same.

I will give GasPods the edge for appearance though, not quite as funky looking as the AirTabs.

I am curious about them though. I played with AirTabs awhile back on my Audi wagon. Did some A-B-A testing, didn't get enough measurable difference, sent them back.

I'm looking at them again now for our Mini Cooper Clubman. Not so much for the mileage increase, but to keep the back of the car cleaner. That is something the AirTabs seem to do well for the larger vehicles. I'm wondering how the GasPods fare with that, considering they're basically doing the same thing with the airflow. (and my girl would probably like the looks of the pods better than the tabs, so the cost increase is moot. ;) )

Bringing this back up...

Whitedog: Are you still planning on trying them out? Are we out of winter fuel yet east of the Cascades?

Star gazer: Taking another look at your pictures, that is a great looking shop. But I'd wager its also an enclosed dog agility arena. I noticed the equipment in the background. My girl has been doing agility for a few years now with our two Italian greyhounds. I've even gone to a few events with her. ;)

She 'lets' me park my stuff in there, but her boundary line keeps squeezing me over and over...... :)

Actually this is a good time to start since we are out of Winter fuel. I guess Sunday will be the day to first install them. That will give us the first week of May as "off" and the second week as "on" and back and forth that way. With this method, the temperature variations will sort out and even out the data.

How are they working

Whitedog, Zyzzyx, star gazer,

How did the Gas Pods or Air Tabs work out? Did they keep the back of the Transit clean, from all the dust and rain drops etc? Everytime it sprinkles the back of mine gets coated with drops and dirt smears.

Like to find something that will keep it clean.
