Really, what's it for? It sticks out farther than the wheel well in the pictures I see, making it hard to put in a piece of plywood/sheetrock when you take the seats out. (Passenger van)
It is the AC ...however the dealer I spoke to yesterday said they have had so many complaints about that AC location for the "Van/cargo" models, they are now ceiling mounting them for the 2017 Im considering. I have not seen photos of this yet as there is ducting to it too he said.
I think the blower housing will still be mounted in the floor but instead of the blower screen being on top of the blower it will use the same ductwork as the wagon. If you have never seen the rear air on the van, you can go to the Matt Ford site and see a picture of one that was ordered by one of their customers. You can see that the blower screen comes right off the top of the blower.
i saw a used transit in texas that had a ceiling mount last april, that thing hung down 6 inches bellow the door frame. i wondered what it was used for because it was a LWB, MR uninsulated cargo van? but it would make more sense having a ceiling mount in the wagon because air slows down with every turn in the ductwork, one less turn, more cold air out the vents!
My 2003 Sprinter wagon has the air on the ceiling, and the blower also hangs down 6" lower than the top of the rear doors. Unlike the 04-06 sprinters with rear air, I don't have a big box on top of the roof, though.
It seems like Ford could have incorporated some ductwork in the headliner and located the blower in a more flush position on the wall. It almost looks like an afterthought! I wonder if anyone has come up with a DIY modification to relocate it?
Sure it intrudes on floor space but not by much. It's a far better solution than my Sprinter roof top unit for me. I bought the oem piece that runs from the floor unit to the ceiling and bends 90d. The vertical part is covered by my oem wall panels. So now I have very efficient rear air on a vehicle that fits in my garage. The dogs are happy, too. Just got back from a local breed show. Temps mid 90s. Everyone comfortable and I was even able to idle a bit without dread.
