Very cool. Especially since I have most of these. :D

The battery jumper is in the form of a Viatek Pocket Jump. It jumps the car from the cigarette lighter plugin. Rated at 4400mAh and output of 5v too... it will not only jump start any vehicle up to an 8 cylinder truck, suv but also hybrids that use 12v--- up to several times before having to be recharged. It also has the usb which will charge cell phones.

I also have the Snow Lizard portable power. It's rating is either 4400 or 5400 mAh 5V and will recharge my phone etc countless times (full charge) before needing recharging itself (done via usb).

Suction cup holders are my friend and I suspect with the huge windshield I won't have any trouble finding a place for my cell phone holder, should I need it for driving for some strange reason.

I have two dash cams and will put one facing behind me to catch any details, but also ordered the back up camera and proximity alarm (not the back up sounder as there's no off switch for it!).

No hydraulic jack but then I have AAA and can't think to do anything like that anyway.

I have a soft spot (passionate but soft) for gadgets! May I suggest others?

A glass break with seatbelt cutter--- secured in a HANDY place (complete with practice grabbing and "using" it.)

A GPS. If we are out and about in strange places in this nation, knowing how we can travel to get out of a possibly bad situation is key, imo. The phone ap maps are trash imo, and you might not have service. GPS are satellite and within a short time you'll have service if you happen to lose it... I liked my Tom Tom but really rely upon my lifetime updating Garmin!

A foldup cardboard sign that says SEND POLICE. Anytime you are disabled along side a road, boondocking etc you are vulnerable to muggers etc. Rather than "send help", the "send police" will waylay malicious minded folks who will think (and might be correct) that the LEO is on his/her way!

And while I'm on the risk management buzz... Put " ICE " into your cell phone number list. EMTs and LEOs are trained to look into your phone for this IN CASE of EMERGENCY contact info. List the person and phone number of your emergency contact... and if you have no one, then put that in there too so they will know that.

Ordered on 11/22 150 MR 148 with most options available. With Ford holiday factory shutdown it's not too optimistic that we will have the van by January end. So we started to look for a 250 with similar options alreay at a dealership - not much luck either.

We plan to use the van to go camping. Mostly at campsites that have water and electric hookup and facilities. So the must have for us are 1) Portable AC (~$500) and 2) Portable Heater (~$10) and 3) TV ($500) that can be connected to the site electric.

Has anyone already done these and can advice? TIA

what i am saying is the air conditioner works well IF the van is insulated, (you have to install insulation) none of the transit vans (wagon or cargo) come from the factory with insulation pre installed in them! (my walls are insulated with 1'' and 1/2'' of foil backed polyiso foam board, so it is very well insulated compared to some other peoples cargo vans!)

Michael - Thank you very much. Like to insulate my van as well. Is it easy to do? Instructions/Directions?

back to thread topic ;)

Would a compass be a gadget too? :D

I rely upon technology BUT especially now with the internet being given to the international group, there's less of a guarantee for it to be there for us especially when we need it...

so I have compass and maps on hand (I know, old school...)

While a little OT (it IS "my" thread) :D ... I caution with putting something like the only cell phone you have on the dash or sitting where it might go flying in an accident. I know it's not good, nor comfortable, to keep it in your pocket, but I want mine where even with a broken arm I could manage to call in emergency...

And along with my risk management training pov.... too many distractions in your driving area can cause what you're preparing against. (But then, caution about radio, conversations, eating, etc when driving a 9000 lb weapon.)

that's the similar thinking when I posted the glass break gadget... if it's just velcro'd without heavy duty velcro, then it's going to go flying and you won't find it after an accident.

IMO these gadgets need to be placed in well thought-out places...and thought about from time to time so you "automatically" know where to get them IN CASE.

I also operate under the notion that if you plan for something it probably won't occur ;)

I am even from an older school. Use paper maps and do not have a cell phone. Tried to use a tablet with a map program and decided I would rather pay attention to driving. Do not want some voice telling me where to turn. I would rather be lost. Since everyone else has a cell phone, in case of an emergency they can call.

What I do for directions besides the paper map is type in my destination address on a map program at home before the trip. Print that to be used when close to the destination.

I'd like to say that an indash bluetooth equipped radio is a HUGE bang for the buck upgrade. A touchscreen Android operating system radio; basically a tablet PC that also plays CD/DVD. Add Torque app to that, and you have all kinds of vehicle info at your fingertips, and it's all up-gradable without new hardware.

Also, I enjoy having 800-1200 watt AC power available for the times I need to use a power tool or other device that is not practical to have a 12vdc or battery version. Also good for plugging in multiple kinds of power tool battery chargers. I like to run an outlet to the rear that is accessible from just inside the rear door.

Agree on rear camera, excellent for navigating parking lots with the horrible turning radius and agility of the Transit. Also built-in to the Android radio, just connect a camera.

Also agree on the higher capacity USB charging ports, 2.1 amps. There are the ones that plug into the regular "finger zapper" sockets, and built-ins that require drilling a hole or replacing a finger zapper outlet. I usually install one in the dash and in the rear wall for accessing from the bench seat (keeps screen addict kids happy).

As for cell phone mount; above Android radio channels calls through it, and has built in mic. Pairs with any smartphone. Just stick the cell phone in a storage cubby of glovebox. It was great on the roadtrip this weekend.

GPS? Also in the Android radio.

Other gadgetry:
I like to travel with a "vehicle emergency kit" that includes tow rope, jumper cables, tire repair kit, and a good mini air compressor. All of this easily fits under the passenger seat with the jack. Not a crappy $10 compressor, but one that will fill the tire in less than 2 minutes (they start at $50 and go up). Offroaders have these little compressors. On adventure trips in my Sprinter, I would take a spare battery, and keep it topped off with a 1.5 watt solar charger. I may build a spot for a spare battery that is isolated from the starting battery, for emergencies and running some auxiliary lighting or something. I have no need for hundreds of amp hours of "house" battery, because I cook with gas and heat with the dash, and use a cooler instead of an electric fridge (but I'm looking hard at the ARB and similar fridge/freezers...).

I can attest to the cell phone flying in an accident. Back in the 90's when I had a huge one I got in a minor accident with it on the passenger seat, then spent considerable time hunting for it under all the other stuff that went flying. Had it been a more serious accident, that could have been a real problem.
