Looks like we are now going be able to use the volume button to control heat and fan levels among other useful things.

I was just reading the email. It looks like a pretty big update.
This image from the update notification shows a dial on the display - does it mimic the physical dial then?

Added Dial Functionality
More than just volume — the dial on your SYNC display can now be used for climate controls too, so you can adjust temperature, fan speed and, when equipped, heated seats.

newb here...how do we get the update?

ah...found it
Looking forward to all the bugs and unintended consequences that Ford's engineers have overlooked while designing this. Over-under on how many versions before the damage is corrected? 2.5?

That email didn't make any sense. It was all about Sync 4A... Transit Vans don't have 4A, as 4A is the tall vertical screen found in Mach E & F150. The Transit just has regular Sync 4. Ford really needs to get their sh*t together.

It is not just you, The need for a sync3 update has been causing al of of problems for early model transit's recently. Until now there has never been any problems.
I've only ever seen that volume dial on a mach e, obviously ford sent us all the update info as if we all have the mach e, don't hold your breath waiting for them to admit the mistake or send us the correct info if there is any. maybe we are getting parts of this....maybe not. your screen may look totally different a week from thursday and leave you searching for how to make everything work when you're already late and maybe this is just ford screwin with us all yet again.https://m.m.email-ford.com/nl/jsp/m.jsp?c=%40fKoW0zaqHEKS4k2A0EClDxnnWqB3dzwHxwoNhd9FQHI%3D&cid=PRODDM1165425&bid=2048363607

Am I correct in assuming that the update happens automatically? Does the van need to be outside? How does one know if/when the update has happened?

Because I happened to be looking it up:

Thanks @LittleHippo So it looks like if I do nothing, I may or may not get updated? Is that correct? It also looks like if I do get an update, it will appear on the screen. Is that correct?

I could now go into a rant about how I f-ing hate all this useless tech. About how so much of it represents negative progress and how so much of it could be stripped off of this vehicle and the only consequence would be improvement. But such ranting is not in my nature.

On the early model transit's you have to go to the dealer for sync3 updates, So you may have a blank screen for weeks while you wait for a appointment.
My 2022 Lightning Lariat with 4A with the big screen updated a week or two ago and it's been working flawlessly. It's a very significant change, now that dial controls all the fan speed, temperatures etc.

So much better than the old version. OTA Updates did it quietly one night, I didnt have to do anything.

Haven't checked the 2022 van yet, hoping for similar functionality improvements, just not sure what they would be with no physical dial in the middle.
