I love gadgets. I should have checked on this before I bought my 2016 Transit, but I like the idea of the much larger screen and the possibility of integrated functions as well as mapping. So what does it take to upgrade from Sync to Sync 3???
  • How much?
  • How hard to install?
  • What additional functions can I expect?
  • What are the negatives???

Ford claims upgrading from MFT to sync3 is not possible. If you have a van built when sync3 was available and a lower spec radio, it might be possible. What is possible is getting an aftermarket unit which could be a lot better and cheaper than sync3. Lots of detailed experience in the electronics section of this forum.

The major difference between Sync and Sync3 is that Sync3 will eventually support Apple Airplay and Android Auto. Alarmist is correct in that it would be cheaper and better to go with Kenwood, Pioneer, Alpine, etc.
I am getting a Kenwood DDX-9903S with a Maestro RR interface that will do everything Sync3 does and display vehicle information such as tire pressure and temperature, engine error codes with the ability to clear them and display the back up camera.

Factory radios and electronics suck compared to aftermarket. Best bet is to just order radio prep and get a good head unit and speakers after you get the van. I don't know if you can get steering wheel controls without a radio, though. Might have to do it the old fashioned way and reach over 10" to change the volume or channel.
