Got a used van that came with the horrendous plastic chrome hub caps. I didn't want to spend money on new wheels so I decided to try and do something with the steel wheels. I didn't like the idea of the small plastic hub covers either. Having access to a CNC mill, I machined some center hub covers from aluminum and powder coated them in gloss black. I used the 5 smaller holes (not sure what their purpose is?) near the rim center to attach the covers. I tapped the holes in the rims with a 3/8-16 tap so I could bolt the cover to the rim.

I was just going to clean the rims but found them pretty scratched up from the hub cap metal clips. So I decided to try the "Plasti-Dip" trick to coat the rims and give them a nicer finish. I used 5 coats of flat black followed by two coats of clear glossifier to give them a satin appearance. I finished it off with some McGard chrome lug nuts. Here are a few pics of the finished product.

Sorry smacdiesel I can't really use the machinery at my work to make side money for myself - plus free time is hard to find for me these days. I appreciate your compliments on the wheels however. I was thinking that a simplified version of the cap I CNC'ed could be made quite easily with access to a manual lathe and mill. Maybe use 1/4" thick plate aluminum, drill the 5 holes, and round off the edge. it might still look decent. Attached is the dimensions that I made my cap to. Just hand measured the hole spacing on the rim with calipers and it worked out well - no problem with the bolt alignment. Good luck.

Very nice. I like the look of the steels without covers - I was thinking about just painting the centers. I do work at a machine shop too :)
