We have ok service from ATT at home, but my wife's job gave here a T mobile phone and we have essentially zero service for that at the house. I really wanted something more like a weboost but they gave us a sort of mini cell tower box that plugs into our DSL router. I wasn't really thrilled to do it this way, but it does work very well for cell phone reception so she is happy.

I can't say that I would recommend ATT right now because they decided that all of our 4 G phones which were working just fine weren't good enough, turned them all off, and sent us some el crappo phones that aren't even slightly viable as "free replacements".

Interestingly, even in its not perfect state, Starlink is fairly substantially faster than our DSL service and only $25 / month more.
AT&T 3G and 4G still works, I have been getting notices every month for about a year that say 4g will stop working in 30 days. I really thought they would finally turn it off the first of the year but it still works! I am thinking it is because the aircraft industry is still fighting against 5G interfering with their instruments.
I have Consumer Cellular which uses AT&T, I have been with them almost from the beginning. $20 dollars a month but I am up to $25 now because I am using the phone more. I am thinking the phone is 3G because it is 7 years old. Flip-phone with no data. The original battery will still hold a charge all day if I do not make any calls and if I do I have about 20 minutes of talk. Some how I lucked out and got a unlisted phone number, Telemarketers never call this number.

It been Gusty Windy here - blew over chairs tables and stuff -
So far starlink dish has not moved at all -
i did put 2 water bottles resting on legs to help hold down -

dish is shaped like Upside Down airplane wing so
think wind causes dish to be pushed Down onto ground -
holding it in place - Nice -

$1200/yr is pretty steep, and at least with Sirius xm and direct tv I had enough dead zones and obstruction (former) or storm related (latter) outages that I lost interest in satellite tech.

But it sure would be nice to get better speeds or any signal at all in some of my favorite remote locations.

Please keep posting about this after the initial excitement starts to fade and you get more long-term experience with it. If $1200/yr is still feeling like a worthy expense by next year, I'd like to know. Long-term user critiques are very useful. I just might give it a try.

Cheers.

Got my invite to sign up a few hours ago. And then another email after that informing me they're raising the price of the equipment to $549 ($599 for anyone who hadn't put in a deposit) and the monthly fee is going up to $110 from $99.

I can confirm the increased price. I just got the same email.

I pay $100 for good fast internet at my house. It's not unlimited, but it is more than I use and I stream a lot. If I could get equal service for $110 and be able to take it with me, I would think of that as a square deal.

2 nights ago got hit with Gust of wind that was very strong -
blew over heavy exercise table moved it 5 feet sideways -
stuff went flying - van shake -

Starlink dish did not appear move - same spot -
pretty sure shape of dish pushes Down in wind -
i do have 2 water bottles tied to stand -
in strong wind dish moves 1 mm at most - tiny shake -

friends starlink dish on RV roof did not move ether -

Dust storms did not seem to effect starlink data -
if it does its not much -
yesterday thick dust - still fast

front of dish is covered in dust and rain spots -

data speed does vary quit a bit - 265 to 63 mbs -
my guess is average 130/150 mbs Down -
low data rate is rare - never seen below 63mbs -
while doing speed tests Im playing videos same time -
no bad effect -
fellow camper 75 yards away is using my starlink data also -

doing Speed Tests dish watt use does go UP -
amount changes quickly -
saw 63watts for 2 seconds - 50watts 5 seconds - 40 watts rest of speed test -
Have seen around 32watts Much of time normal use -
seems to be in 32 to 40 watts mostly -

friends starlink dish is 100ft away from me -
2 dishes close together may effect data speed small amount -
not sure -
will try to come up with some kind of test -

Both dishes Pointed Same spot in sky -
dishes dont move or track -

so far starlink has worked Great -
in a week One Buffer wheel 3 seconds -
rest of time smooth

can watch video Full rez - picture looks Great -
no studer -
Being able to See clear sharp picture is Awesome -

Picture seems to Look Better than the last few months
that I was on wired internet -
dont know if that possible - but looks that way -

if Moving to New location is not big deal -
6 years of phone data use will be Over

Settings - scroll down
Advanced - scroll down -
DeBug - click

Scroll way down -

Dish -

Roaming > true

Starlink changes /Turns ON Roaming -
as far as i know user cant change this setting -
-----

when first turned ON speeds will change - ping etc
will get faster as dish figures out UR location / best sats etc
i get ping as low as 21 to 36 - mostly - middle of nowhere -

dish moved small amount few hours after turning ON 2 days ago
this is only time have seen dish move after setup new location

my speeds are lower than at HOME location cell - 100-120 mbs -
Home cell was getting 160 / 220 ish -

Starlink says Roaming speeds May be slower depending on location - # users -
Home cell users get Priority over Roaming users - Every location -

So, for you Starlink users, I will be getting my van pretty soon, but no idea when I will get my Starlink dish. As I build out the van, I want to make it as plug and play as possible for when I get a dish. I am looking for guidance on doing that.

1. What sort of prep should I put in the ceiling for mounting the dish to the roof?
2. How many and what size cables will need to penetrate the roof?
3. Where do those cables need to go?
4. What other equipment, and what size, will need to be mounted inside the van?
5. From where does the signal radiate, and what implications does that have with regards to getting the signal from my front yard into my home (when not traveling)?

Thanks!

mounting on roof will be easy -
stand leg ends have hole for screw -
could make slide in bracket or many other ways -

think im going to place on ground -
van in shade dish in open sky - cable is 75ft long

I have V2 dish -
One cable comes from dish -
hole in roof with fitting 1 inch ID might work -
dish cable end has connector is about 4 inches long and has
a slight L shape - One and 1/4 inch ID fitting will work for sure -
likely smaller ID will work Im just guessing
cable is 1/4 inch OD

Small inverter 300watts will easily power dish -
(i power everything in van with one 300 watt PS inverter
except fridge - Ice maker - InstaPot - ebike

Wifi unit has 2 cables into it -
1 cable from dish and one 110v power cable -
wifi unit cables plug into bottom - good design -

wifi into house should be like any other wifi -
in flat desert wifi range was about 200 yards - maybe more

yesterday uploaded 636mb file - took 11 minutes -
starlink is still in Roaming > True -
roaming mode ON - im not in Home cell

dish has been threw several strong wind storms
has not moved at all -
dish shape must be pushing Down in wind -
friends dish has not moved ether

dust does not seem to mess with signal -

have had starlink for a month - has worked Flawless -
Works Better than expected -
speeds always High -
speed does vary a lot but almost always above 100mb down -
lowest seen was 63mbs down but numbers this low are rare so far -

have uploaded several 1gig files -
seems to be around 100mb a minute Up this location & Roaming -
my dish Roaming has been ON full time this location

Friends starlink worked this location after setup -
dish switched to Roaming after 3 days this location - Nice
friend turns dish OFF at night -
yesterday dish had switched to Roaming > False - (roaming Off )
dish still working Good with similar speed to mine -
dont know why his roaming changed but maybe turning On / Off -
today friends dish switched back to Roaming ON -

on phone app U can watch dish switch to next satellite -
ping numbers get lower as sat gets closer - longer = going away -

Both dishes pointed same spot in sky and dont move -

dishes have been threw High wind gusts and did not move -

looking on app did see there was a Lot of Sat Disconnects ?
after thinking about it -
Dish is on ground 15ft from van and I walk in Front of dish
many times a day - pretty sure disconnects caused by me - lol

power used is 32 to 40 watts -
dish is pointed 350 % north 40% up
clouds have Zero effect
