In the 90's we had an intern engineer at our snowboard company that had been on Purdue's solar car team. We went down to Denver to watch that leg of the race with him. It was pretty cool even back then. There was a huge variety of design solutions and experiments, because it was a fledgeling sport. I think they pretty much all follow the same design formula now, because what works has been winnowed down.

At UCSB our Mechanical Engineering undergrads entered many of those nationwide team competitions. Streamlined bicycles, dune buggies, human-powered submarines, high milage vehicles. They designed and built everything themselves. Fun times.
