Any one perturbed about the short exhaust pipe on the ext version
It ends under the vehicle.. At idle it come right up under the bumper in the rear into your face as your loading the van.. Bad design ? any thoughts..

Maybe they were afraid it would bottom out on steeper grades.

My worry is it will help rust out the rear. When not moving the steam just rolls up all around the rear, it has to be wetting it all down in this cold weather. I just thought it seemed a bit odd.

Yeah I thought for CO reasons you needed a TAIL pipe or else a stack to be safe.

I plan to have a tailpipe extension installed. Section 3.5.1 of the Body and Equipment Mounting Manual says, “Extensions to the exhaust outlet pipe should direct exhaust way from the body to minimize the possibility of fumes entering the vehicle. Extensions should also protrude beyond the vertical body surface.” It appears Ford is not following its own advice.

Does the exhaust terminate behind the rear axle, or in front? I wonder if a side exit in front of the rear wheel is more appropriate? My T1N Sprinter is a 158" wheelbase model. The exhaust ends in a turndown roughly in the middle of the wheelbase. Never had a problem with smelling exhaust in the cabin, however, I always wanted a NASCAR style side exit. Maybe my Transit will finally get one.

It ends beyond the rear wheel it just needs a 90 bend and exit out the side behind the rear wheel... next upgrade for sure

Just as the exhaust pipe goes up over the rear axle, there is a muffler, so the tailpipe diversion would need to be behind the rear wheel., not in front of it.

Approach your dealer about covering this as it is not a legal system in any of my jurisdiction as it doesn't terminate outside the perimeter of the passenger compartment. Check the regulation in your area but I would find it amazing if any legislation would allow an exhaust to terminate almost 4' under the vehicle. I cover this in another thread...but yes you can terminate it out the side or back.
