Shore Power from an EV Charging Station

I've been using this EV charger power converter for over a year now and it's been great. Sure with the correct setup you can get just as much (or more) power from the alternator. It's great to have if you're in a pinch though.

I even wrote a whole blog post on it
Shore Power Charge Using EV Charging Stations — STOKE LOAF VAN

As for the legalities of using it, it's a bit of a grey area. I did a bit of research and most of the laws actually focus on the parking spot. Not the actual EV charger usage. I just park in the adjacent parking spot, the cords are always plenty long enough to reach. If it's a paid charger then you're paying for the electricity the laws generally say much there since it's "your" electricity. The exception to this is the free EV chargers. In that case "someone" is paying for the power with the intent that it be used for vehicle propulsion.

I've only had one instance when another EV car pulled up and needed to charge. I was sitting in the van so I jumped out and unplugged from the EV charger and offered it to him. We had a nice chat about camper vans and then he plugged my van back in when he left. No harm done.
