Ahoy there!

I am new to the forum and by joining the forum look to solidify my decision between Transit and Sprinter. What I have learned so far is that both companies are not perfect. I am leaning towards the Transit as the seats best for my touring needs as a theatre artist. purplepirate.com

I presently have a TDI Golf wagon and the fuel efficiency is awesome. Fuel price...not so awesome.

I am OK with a gas engine, however the ECOboost has had issues. Are those issues resolved?

Does the Ecoboost need premium fuel? It would seem that if it does then the diesel option is more viable for my 40,000+ kms per year of touring.

There are so many numbers to crunch.....Thanks in advance.

See this thread for earlier discussion:

Regular it will be for my 3.5 EcoBoost, except when towing a trailer and/or at higher elevations.

PS -- before posting a new topic, you can look down the list of topics in the sub-topic here (Ford Transit General Discussion) to see if previous threads have covered the issue at hand:

Thanks PeterR - I saw the 87 vs 89 and thought it meant model year.

2015 Ford Transit Owner?s Manual & Maintenance Guides | Official Ford Owner Site

and Quick Reference

Ford says:
use “Regular” unleaded gasoline with an octane rating of 87.

My truck is new, but i've not had any issues with the EcoBoost feature, except the tricky part about staying within the speed limit. Ecoboost makes this harder than you may expect.
Thanks vnehess - I am less interested in what Ford says as my experience with Ford, MB, BMW etc. employees will say whatever they need to make the sale.

The recommendation of 87 Octane gas is not just something a Ford employee said, it is printed in the owner's manual:

Fuel Quality - Gasoline - Ford TRANSIT 2015 Owner's Manual [Page 115]

[Page 115 of 461]:

3.5L V6 EcoBoost

We recommend regular unleaded gasoline
with a pump (R+M)/2 octane rating of 87.
Some stations offer fuels posted as regular
with an octane rating below 87, particularly
in high altitude areas. We do not
recommend fuels with an octane rating
below 87. To provide improved
performance, we recommend premium
fuel for severe duty usage, such as trailer
tow.

Just did a trip calculation on Gas Buddy website for a trip we take across the US once a year, plugging in all the stops. When comparing Diesel to Premium using known mpg of each engine towing a heavy load, Diesel is actually cheaper by a few hundred for the 12k mile trip based on today's prices.

Do this all the time around the country and basically Diesel is about the same price as Premium in most states in the last 3 years. And if you're worried about the extra expense of Blu Def fluid for a diesel van, we're talking about $20 to top up your fluid about every 9000 miles or so. Not even worth bringing that into the conversation.

Just check fuel prices online, city and statewide across the country. You will be hard pressed to find many places that are $1 difference between Diesel and Premium.

It would be interesting to see what the sales percentages are for the three available engines.

From what little I have been able to infer, the diesel may not be as popular as Ford had hoped. That could be wrong of course.

Any official figures on sales for each type of engine?
