I am about to order the 148" Medium roof Transit. I will be upfitting it with the maximum amount of shelving I can jam in. I am ordering it with the rear a/c option. I know that the rear air unit is mounted on the floor in the rear left corner of the cargo area. I would like to know how far the unit sticks out in to the cargo area from the left side of the van? I especially need to know how far forward of the rear door does it take up floor space.

Thanks to anyone who has this set up and can take measurements for me. If it isn't asking too much, while you are measuring could you please tell me how wide the cargo area is 60" above floor level?

At 60" above the floor I measured 64" wide between the liner panels near the rear door. Not the door opening but the inside walls.

The AC unit extends 23" from the back door into the van. Sicks out about 12" from the liner panel. I have no problem sliding a 49" wide panel on the floor past the AC and wheel well. Close to AC but fits.

Warm air out from under the passenger seat. That is probably why front carpet has to be ordered so they can rout the duct under it. Of course many of us found out that the removed the nice vinyl flooring. It also moves the jack to behind the pass rear wheel well where it is strapped down.

The cold air comes out of the rear unit itself.

pwrov1,

Should look the same. You can search for other pic's by using the search box, top right. Just type in Van rear a/c

Got this from a post by Whitedog, about it.

Here is the rear AC in the passenger van, undressed:

Of course it has covers over the ducting:

I believe the images in post #6 are of an extra long van/wagon. I am interested in seeing what the rear air looks like in a long version. I think the rear ac unit takes up almost all the space between the rear door and the wheel well. I am trying to figure out how to upfit a long cargo van with the maximum amount of shelving. I am not sure if it is possible to span the floor mounted ac unit. Any ideas?

System Edstrom racks/bins are still available. It's a completely customizable solution. You could span the Grand Canyon with it. OK, that was an exaggeration. Their catalog:

It's expensive. That said, my gear is ten years old and in it's second van. Good as new. I have the steel stuff. They also have some of their kit in aluminum now if weight is a concern.

That what mine is.
Thanks for the measurements you took the other day. They were helpful.
I need to install shelving from the bulkhead to the backdoor on the drivers side of the van. Usually you install 2 units of whatever lengths are available to use as much of the space as you can. The wheel well is normally the only obstacle so it is pretty easy to use most of the space. The rear air really complicates the issue. I can't tell how much space there is between the rear door and the ac unit and between the ac unit and the wheel well.

CSAF,
Yes, believe that is the extended length version, I have the 148 wb , (long) from memory, the a/c takes up the almost the whole area back of the wheel well. Believe there might have been a couple of inches between them, but not much at all.

now I know why my rear AC is worthless in Arizona
Hoppymoto,

Curious also, why is it useless? Do you have a van or wagon? Can understand if it is a van, no vents to bring the cold air up and forward.

Here are a couple pics.
Where does the air come out of in that contraption? Does it blow straight up or outward across the width of the van? Also, am I correct that the length between the wheel well and the rear door is the same for the 130 WB and the regular 148 WB?
Thanks.

Yes it blows upward and slightly out. Does a good job for me however I plan to make a duct of some kind to run it up along the wall, if I ever get around to it.

Love the rear a/c. I've got dog crates and training stuff jammed around it but it does the job. And it's not on the ROOF like the Sprinter. As an added bonus it runs w/o the front air on - a requirement on the Sprinter. And as an additional added bonus it runs in fan-only. Have looked for the vertical part to take air from the unit to the ceiling but haven't found a vin for a LR 148 wagon to look it up. One downside - the heater under the passenger seat is always on and hot. All adds up to a fully a/ced vehicle that I can fit five dogs in and park in my garage.
