Dear Reader,

I typically don't post or review, but wanted to share an experience I had with QuadVan. It's a bit dated, but it's a new year and I've been wanting to share.

I have a 10 passenger, 2017 Transit, and have been doing some conversion / modifications to facilitate taking kids and folks up to snow (CA - Tahoe area) as well as camping / sleeping / biking etc., so I want everything to be removable, putting it back in passenger mode.

To get to the snow, and the best backpacking spots, I needed a 4x4 system. I decided on QuadVan to convert my van in the summer of 2019.

John McKee, the owner of QuadVan is a passionate builder, and loves to talk about all things mechanical, and his van builds in particular. Through those conversations, John recommended I develop a relationship with my local Ford dealer and have the transmission fluid changed before the recommended interval so they can see the build and all the OEM serviceable parts being used.

After a few months of driving my QuadVan, I decided to heed John's advice and take it in to San Leandro Ford for a transmission fluid service. (Fall 2019) The day after my appointment, the van was smoking a little. I assumed some fluid must have spilled during the service and was burning off. A few days later, going over a grade from the SF Bay Area toward Tahoe, I had a full boil over, transmission fluid leaking down to my exhaust pipe and smoke going everywhere. Kids crying, vacation over.

Long story short, San Leandro Ford wanted nothing to do with my van after their transmission service and refused to work on my van any further. They said the cause of the issue was the after market 4wd system...

I was in constant communication with John at QuadVan and he tried talking to the Ford dealer as well. No luck. Fortunately, I had been baptized into the QuadVan family, and he recommend I take it to a mechanic he knows in the Bay Area to get an accurate diagnosis. Upon arrival, I assumed I had the wrong address as there were Lamborghini's, Porsche's, and other NASCAR type cars being worked on.

Turns out John has some pretty "switched on" mechanic friends. They promptly started moving hundreds of thousands of dollars worth of race cars out of the way to get my van up on a lift. After a few Facetime calls between John and his friend, we found that the transmission had been overfilled by over a quart of fluid, leading to the boil over.

I was very nervous through this whole ordeal, after spending many thousands of dollars on my conversion. John assured me every step of the way, offered to fly down if needed, and was always willing to take a call. My bill for the top notch race car mechanics fixing Ford's mistake: $0.

I just got back from the snow again yesterday. The 4x4 system is working great.

They don't make guys like John McKee anymore. I wish I could say the same thing about Ford.

Happy to answer any questions about my Quadvan experience.

Thank you John and Quadvan!

John just finished my conversion right before Christmas. The whole encounter was fantastic. A couple of days later i got a call from him checking on me. My health issues were flaring up and he was concerned about me driving home alone (1500 miles). I thanked him for the concern. His response was that i was now part of the Quadvan family.
what more can you ask for.

Thanks for sharing. I had a very similar experience, without even being a 4x4 conversion customer!

Had a few questions wrt to true 4WD vs. 2020 AWD, whether it was possible to convert the AWD to 4WD, and decided to give them a call. Ended up speaking with John for darn near an hour and received tons of invaluable information.

He‘s pretty awesome indeed...

BTW, is your van also a MR shortie? Curious what size tires you’re running after the conversion / lif? Thanks in advance - jack

Yes, Medium Roof, 130" WB.

Quadvan comes with a 2" lift, and I've got the LT 255 / 70 R16 120/117S BFG KO's. John showed me how to modify and seal up the pinch welds to make this size tire work. I know there are other posts on this modification as well. Got them from Costco and had to twist their arm a little to install them as it's not an approved size, and a few pounds under the factory tire load index...

They've been great so far.

Cheers,
Brian

QuadVan put 4WD on my Transit in December. John & crew were great to work with. They also added a TrueTracs, front hitch, tow hooks and skid plates. Have driven ice-and-snow in the Sierras the past few weeks - unplowed forest service roads, rocky gravel bars, icy hills. So far everything is very very solid - night and day difference compared to the factory 2wd.

I think that Porsche may be an ex. Jorge Bergmeister Flying Lizard Racing Porsches - maybe the #45. Pretty cool!

Now if I saw your Transit on top of Dodge Ridge in the winter, I'd really be impressed with QuadVan...

Your review is a great reminder that "getting what you pay for" is usually far more than getting the product itself.
Ha! I'm sure John could come up with a way to make it a tracked vehicle if we tasked him with it. Do you know Dodge? Been skiing there since I was a kid. I just hope it stays open this winter.

Switched from Kirkwood to Dodge when it was time to teach a toddler to ski. Did you ever take the van up to Dodge in the winter before the Quadvan conversion? (To the base lot, not the summit ;))

I have not. I used to go up plenty of times in my 2wd ford ranger, during my teenage years. Ended up going backwards down the hill more than one time. Fortunately the snow banks were always high enough to stop me :)

Assuming the AWD version really isn't compatible to convert to 4WD?
