Does anyone know the PN for the headliner corner Styrofoam blocks in a HR cargo van? Or have any they might be interested in selling to me? I want to try and make them more aesthetically pleasing.

I wonder what happens to the foam blocks when the side airbags are deployed? A little more context would be helpful regardless of the warranty.

For example, are the blocks jettisoned?

It's a safety issue. The foam is to protect your melon in a rollover. That's why they say not to eff with it. It would be, on paper at least, like removing the seat belts or the airbags. They mention it because it's less obvious what their purpose is. Think lawyers and CYA.

i for one am not worried about resale value, everything is securely bolted to the floor, walls and roof beams. i have never had an accident in 44 years of driving but there is a first time for everything, and what is in the back will stay in the back! (i hope!)

The lower part of the block is pretty thin, and I would imagine either breaks or just folds out of the way when the bag goes off. Only the tail end of the bag is in this area, at least on the HR van.

Anyways, I am having a hard time finding the PN, I'd like to modify mine but only if I know I can return to stock if I don't like them.

My guess is that you can't order the parts for any of the air bag system due to legal requirements.

I'm pretty sure on many of the cargo vans there is no air bag in that area. I have the foam blocks off and the cab cover peeled back and do not see any air bags.

They seem too far away from my head to do anything in a crash.

Does your cab cover say "Air Bag" on it. Mine has it stamped in on both sides.

I don't have side airbags in my cargo, but have these useless blocks. I upholstered them and they look ok.

Fordparts.com has the part number as 51942. Easiest way to get to them is to search for "headliner" as a keyword.

Awesome, thanks Rondo. Those things are a lot more expensive than I would have guessed. Plan 2 was to upholster, so looks like I'll be doing that.

Also, for anyone out there that pulled these off and need new Xmas tree fasteners to put them back on, I found some on
clipsandfasteners.com, PN A20926.

Did anyone ever figure this out? It looks to me, based on the vehicle bulletin mentioned above and the labelling on the cab headliner, that the head side airbags deploy towards the cab. My guess is that the blocks serve to pad the airbag deployment and your head in case of roll-over or roof deformation of some sort. I don't think that the blocks break away as some have suggested, it seems to me that the bags deploy under the cab headliner on the side. The headliner is pretty flexible, whereas the blocks are not. Also, the blocks are held in place by almost impossible to remove plastic clips. I finally did manage to remove them, though.

Also, the vehicle bulletin doesn't have an accurate picture of the blocks in my cargo van. I wonder if there's a separate block on passenger vans that they're talking about.

I think I may do what others have done and upholster the blocks. I've been wondering about cutting them to allow my finished roof with headliner go behind it. Has anyone else done this?

Yes, I trimmed mine with a bandsaw. I trimmed some more when it came time to install a shower rod to hang a curtain from. I don't have any particular concerns about those hunks of foam.
