Does the color you order a transit in affect the wait time? In other words if you order a red van will it take longer than a white van?
What colors should be avoided?
I do not want black or white. I like the dark grey and light grey colors but do not want to wait months extra because og the color.

Have same question, I’m ordering red (unless a lime green pops up all of the sudden!)

Not having problems getting colors as if you looked at the Transits currently on our lot, we have a lot of the Avalanche Gray, Abyss Gray, and Carbonized Gray. The others are a Blue Jeans cargo van, Ingot Silver passenger van, and 2 Race Red Transits, one is a CrewVan and the other is a All Around Windows cargo van.

That red all around windows cargo sounds like it’s headed in my direction…

Thanks for that update.
I will be ordering from you as soon as I have your book and the order window opens. I know you said before that the timing does not make it come sooner but I just want to get the order part done so I can move on to other stuff.

My good friend and Transit owner Walt Moser came by the dealership yesterday to look at some of the 2021 Transits we had on the lot and to compare the changes between his 2019 Transit LR 12 passenger van he bought new from me and the current 2021 passenger van. He brought his electronic temperature sensor to see which one of the Transit colors was the coolest. As we had tested a few years back, the Ingot Silver exterior color showed to be the coolest color in the sunlight. AGAIN...the Ingot Silver tested out the coolest even among the NEW gray colors.

He is thinking about upgrading to the 2022 Transit passenger van with so many changes between his 2019 and the 2022 model. His current 2019 T-350 LR 12 passenger van only has 25,000 miles on it so he may be trading it in or selling it outright. He keeps all of his vehicles in top shape with scheduled maintenance. His prior Transit was a 15 passenger model and it was so nice I convinced him to sell it on his own as he takes most of the seats out so they look like new when placed back in the van. I helped him put a ad in his local craigslist site and buyers were fighting to buy it as it was so nice. I convinced him that the 12 passenger model would work better for his uses as the 2019 model was the first year model to have the quick release handles on the single 16" seat so you could easily remove ALL of the seats to have a flat floor configuration. Since he takes out the rear seats for most of his uses, he wanted to see some of the 8 passenger seating vans I had at the dealership. This may be his next change from the 12 passenger 148" WB to the 8 passenger (12 passenger with rear 'delete' seat package). The area where the 2 31" seats would be will still have the floor mounting brackets in place so you have some flexibility to move seats from the front to the rear.

He wanted to see the temperature differences in the exterior colors to make the decision whether to go with another color on his next Transit order. He still likes the Oxford White exterior but with seeing ALL of the 3 new gray colors on the Transits on the lot he may decide to make a change on the 2022. We'll see!!

Ed is so dedicated and helpful and hard working and energetic with his knowledge and experience to clarify or make any wish or need for his customers a reality that it pains me to comment he transposed the 142 degree carbonized gray temp into 124 degrees. The KC area heat wave this week is a real cooker and Ed had all these popular colors lined up together for a temperature comparison along with the different wheels and all the popular interior features. Great to see all these sold transits at Gary Crossley Ford waiting for their excited and happy new owners . - - Walt- -

This was done yesterday afternoon 5 pm with ALL of the rear doors facing the sun. The Ingot Silver was in the 113-114 range. Oxford White was in the 118-119, The others ranged in the 120s with the highest being 142 from the Carbonized Gray van. We do not have a Agate Black. The Race Red was 123.
Hi Ed, I'm curious to know how/where the temperatures were taken: Assuming digital thermometer...and are these interior air temps or ? Thanks for the efforts, this is valuable info!

Do you happen to remember what the reading was for Abyss?

This info really helps since there aren't any on lots to test. I was going to get avalanche but if it is equal to abyss for sun temp i think I'll switch

Once the vehicle are heat soaked the temperatures will all be fairly close. The bigger issue with darker colors is when you are cooling the vehicle to temperatures lower than ambient. The greater light absorption of the darker colors will result in more heat gain that will need to be offset to cool down.

If an IR thermometer is being used to measure the temperature, it the measurements are most likely not accurate especially when comparing metallic and non metallic paints since the emissivity of those finishes will be quite different. I suspect that might be one reason why the white measured higher than the silver. The numbers posted are just a few random anecdotal data points. Feel free to misuse them to justify your aesthetic preferences.

Good points.... maybe testing the interior temps of same body style different color at same point in the vehicle.... but that is quite a bit to ask! ; )

I agree with this approach to finding the real answer. Assuming a van of each color offered is in 90F ambient air at night (Death Valley). The ambient air temp effect on temp in the vans would be identical.

The second issue is daylight hours and direct sun; solar gain from direct sunlight hitting the vans paint, which is where darker colors would have more temp gain. It's hard to say how all of this would add up, but if one is trying to cool a van using A/C and the sun is beating down on it, for sure lighter and more reflective colors are better. The question becomes how much better....10%? 20%? 30%? more? Also insulation used in the interior is helpful, case in point: on a black vehicle in the sun, the surface temp on the painted sheet metal will be vastly higher than the interior of the headliner.

My gut feeling: buy the color you visually admire! and lets get the Myth Busters on this issue!
