And just put it into the trim on the back and then run the wire behind the trim all the way up to the drivers pillar before bringing it out and plugging it into the inverter?

At some point consider to have a GFI in the circuit as a van is considered a "wet area".

Actually that doesn't make much sense since GFCI should be at the outlet right? So maybe it would be better to just do a GFCI

I would think that should work. Have not used them myself.

I guess I'm more asking if it would be ok to have the GFCI on the other end of the cord - next to the inverter - instead of on the power outlet. I mean granted its just a few feet but still.

A GFCI outlet protects itself and downstream outlets that take power from the same positive. When the GFCI pops all the outlets on that line go out.

Given that a van is a mobile environment subject to possible wire chafing over time, it would be even safer to install AFCI/GFCI outlets if you don't have AFCI function built into the source feed. These protect against arcs across the positive/negative as well as ground faults. You can install AFCI breakers at a 120V distribution hub if you have one.

Thank so much! I bought a BUNCH of stuff to start working on the van this weekend, I'll have lo look into putting in the distribution block and AFCI (which I've never even heard of until now haha).
