When I let off the brake while stopped the rear brakes make a loud groan sound. No unusual sounds while driving just the groan when letting off the pedal while stopped.

Any ideas?

yeah my 2016 LWB does, but i wouldnt call it loud, i got a lot of experience putting brakes on heavy trucks in my life, new parts are often not a perfect fit at first, i figure it is just new parts getting broke in but that is just a guess. (shoes often drag a little and are slow releasing. maybe pads do too, it has after all those screw in and out brake cylinders instead of slide in and out cylinders)

Brakes need to be broken in and I'd bet it was never done. Take the van out on a lonely road some where with a speed limit of at least 45mph. Make at least 3 runs where you accelerate to 45 then brake hard but not enough to skid the tires.

This procedure will heat up the pads and rotors and evenly transfer a layer of brake pad resin to the rotors. After that, your groaning brakes should go away. The new brake pad materials need this break in process or they skip under light pressure such as that when releasing the brakes. The skip is the groan you're hearing.

I will also have to try this break in thing.

I have 8k mile. I get the groaning in reverse, but not all the time. I had mine inspected at the dealer and there was not anything wrong with them. They told me while they are noisy, they are normal and a cargo van seems to amplify the sound over a wagon. I can confirm cargo vans do seem to echo more inside.

My rears groan a little in reverse also. On average the brakes are probably running 60% front and 40% rear so the fronts get broken in almost by default but the rears don't. I've got about 1800 miles on mine and haven't done the break in yet. I will if it starts to get annoying.

I ran my rear pads down to under 3mm. The groaning in reverse had increased to an intolerable level, so I replaced them. Didn't even bother to clean the rotors, let alone resurface them. The new pads, Wagner SevereDuty, are silent. They took about a week, maybe 4-500 miles, to fully bed in and begin working properly. Now I can say I'm happy with them. I think the stock pads are the issue. Mine had occasionally groaned in reverse, and were always a bit noisy. Now I can only hear the fronts, which are still original. I also switched the rear brackets as mine were reversed from the factory, but that does not appear to be a factor in brake noise based on what people are posting here. I'll be putting a set on the front.

On these vans the rears wear much faster than the fronts. Strange but true. I got 35k out of the rears. Keep an eye on them.

That is strange. Sounds like maybe they proportion them to help with nose diving or under steer issues. Hard to know for sure. I'll have a look at mine at 20k and if I dont like what I see I'll swap to a set of Super Brakes and vented rotors.

I have put about 10K miles on my 2015 350 Econoboost Transit. It had about 10K when I bought it. I am noticing a noise when I am backing up when I apply the brakes. I thought the first few times it was because they were wet. I can feel a drag and hear the noise and it seems like it is getting a bit worse. Only when I am backing up. Recently serviced, no issues.
I am about to go on a long trip and am concerned that I need to get this checked out. Suggestions?

Check if the caliper brackets are reversed. Also consider new pads. By "recently serviced, no issues" I'm going to guess you took it to a dealer. That's like taking your wife to a stag party for a gynecological check-up.

I have the groan too,

I never had brake groan this bad before. I drove a few blocks with the hand brake slightly engaged, talk about noise.

What is the factory brake pads made of ? ceramic?
If you going to swap out pads, don't forget to put in soft pads so the pads wear and not the rotor.
