Two miles from home today when suddenly next to no power, an Engine Fault-Service Now message comes up on the instrument panel screen. Limped home and shut it off. Restarted it and did the same thing again. Third try, no message but the engine light is on. 8437 miles...3.7L. Called roadside assistance and having it towed to the dealer tomorrow.

Any ideas? Thanks

Check the under-hood fuses. If you can wiggle any of them with a fingertip, you need to alter the rail that the fuses click into so that the fuses fit tightly. This solved my chronic crank/no-start issue.

Same thing happened to me. Lost power (Engine light on dash lit ) and limped to side of the road. I turned off the van. Restarted the van and it was harder to start than usual but did start. No lights. Continued driving. No more issues. Should I take it in? Wait until it happens again? Advice?

At least check for any codes stored in the ecm from the engine light

There have been several people that have reported throttle body failure with their Transits on this forum. It is a known issue with Ford showing up on other models. I'm amazed that someone would risk a failure where the situation might be dangerous. Have it scoped and you will know if you have a problem.

Thanks. The soonest appointment that I could get is for Thursday at 9:30.

ilovehotshot,

I would consider this a safety issue, I would take it in and tell them to fix it, NOW.

Not wait for an appointment.

USMC Vet, I agree with you. I have plans tomorrow out of town. Luckily, we are not taking my car. So the Thursday time is good for me. However, if it cannot be fixed and I have to wait for a part, I will be requiring that they provide me with a rental car.

ilovehotshot,

Understand, I was thinking that you might have been getting a Ford run around. Can't drive it and feel safe, but they wouldn't let you bring it in till Thursday.
Definitely get a loaner if they keep it or have to order a part.

Good luck.

Just curious if you checked the under hood fuse box. There are several circuits in there that control fuel, ECM, etc.

Update...Appointment was 9:30am today. I took the wagon in. I was told it would take until the end of the day or tomorrow before it would be ready to be picked up. I mentioned the throttle body issue, he agreed that many Fords are having that same failure and that is what he would guess the problem is. I asked for a rental car. Service guy asked if I had rental car coverage. I said NO but since it is a known safety concern I should get a rental car. The service guy said let me go check on your coverage and left. When he came back he said since the wagon is so new, he would get me a rental car. As of now 5:30pm, my wagon is still parked where it was left and has not been looked at.

Apparently it was the throttle body. It was ready around noon. Returned rental car. Picked up the wagon. No Charge! Happy.

Instrument cluster module problems

This has happened 4 times now, 2 times three weeks ago and 2 times this morning while at Ford Dealership.

Symptoms, No power, everything shuts off. Usually lasts a couple of minutes to 10 minutes, then comes back. Only to repeat after a few minutes.

The instrument panel goes dark, and the key and anything else will not work. :(

When the system comes back online, the Average MPG, Trip meter and other items are zeroed in the display.

Happened twice this morning while they were recalibrating my TPMS. Tech put computer on it and it showed the Instrument cluster was working (at this point it was) but it showed fault codes for intermittent failures. They were overbooked for today, and no way to get me home if I left it. Reassigned tech schedule for tomorrow (tech that found problem) morning, and it will be going back bright and early.

Tech advised that the instrument module shuts everything down if it isn't receiving a good steady signal. Don't know if this could be what others are experiencing, if the throttle body problem checks out ok?

Signal implies CAN bus. Your van is heavily modified. Can you get it to your upfitter?

alarmist,

Dealer has sent all the codes and connection info, and tech observations to Ford, for their advice. They have left ticket open until Ford responds, they will then conference with mobility up fitter if there is an issue with mobility equipment causing this to affect CAN bus. They put it all back together and said it was ok to drive as long as I know what could occur.

Tech has seen this before and suspects it could just be a faulty instrument cluster.
He has worked on Fords having other mobility equipment connection to bus, that didn't cause problems (some from same up fitter) . But they don't want to replace cluster until they have eliminated other possibilities, first.

I know some will get a kick out of Fords response

Well, checked back with dealer today, they had received the information back from Ford, after sending in all the fault codes and wiring readings etc that were generated on Tuesday by the tech.

The tech was correct, the problem is the failure of the Instrument cluster module, BUT , here is where it gets funny.

Ford will not authorize the dealership to replace the faulty module, unless they (the dealership) puts their computer on the vehicle during an intermittent failure, captures the codes displayed during the failure and sends them back to Ford for review and authorization.

The service manager delivered this information with a knowing look as to what my response would be and he agreed with me.

Since they usually don't make field calls with computer equipment  , he was at a loss on how to do this. He expressed his dissatisfaction with how Ford was putting me in a situation where I might be stranded, and have no way to get assistance.

He advised as most of you will agree, to call customer service to have Fords decision over ruled, so they can get permission to install the module.
Don't you just love it :D
