I just received an email from K&N suggesting I purchase a new air filter from them. The item product number is 33-5024.

They say it will fit all Transit models. $79.99 on their website.

I'm not using one on the Twin-Turbo... They let too much debris past the filter for my approval and mix that debris with the oil that inevitably gets shed especially on a high volume induction system and that is just not the kind of junk I want accumulating in and around my compressors

Thanks for the notice. I have been waiting for these. Now only need to figure out if all the folks who seem to hate K&N filters have valid arguments or not. I've used one on my Honda its whole life which no apparent ill effects. At $80 discounted, that's like 5 normal filters, plus the one Ford will give me when I finally get the 2015 TSB done (I'll put the original moldy filter back in before the repair visit). Not sure its really cost effective given the limited miles I put on the RV/Van.

It's not hating, it's just experience. I've used quite a few K&N filters on various Cars and Trucks and never really had a problem other than the MAF Sensor getting a little dirty etc, but I have dyno tested K&N filters exhaustively on motorcycles over the last couple decades and the performance I have seen lost as well as the dirt and debris I have seen downwind of the filter media proves to me I don't want that kind of crud being inducted into a sophisticated Twin Turbo engine design.

This has little bearing on the issue at hand, but if anyone is interested in the Motorcycle Article I wrote on aftermarket high flow filters it can be viewed here:

Filters that flow better either have more holes for air to flow through or larger holes for air to flow through. There's no other way to get air through.

That filter doesn't look like it has more folds which means it has larger holes which means larger particles get through.

That's a cool article. I've put K&N filters on a few dual-sport bikes in the past. I never would have thought of some of the issues you raised.

You couldn't pay me to run a K&N on anything I own.
BTDT saw the dirt in the intake tract, spent $500 for a new turbo (7.3L Powerstroke diesel)....never again.

Timematters, if you search, you will find a lot of negative info on K&N air filters. If you don't search, send some of your used motor oil that you collect to Blackstone Labs for analysis before you install the K&N. Then send another sample after 5,000 miles of K&N use, and decide for yourself.

Given how poorly designed the air intake system of the Transit appears to be depending on the conditions one is driving in, I don't see a problem in offering an alternative solution.

I have used K&N filters in a variety of different vehicles and they have suffered no ill effects. Will I use one on my Turbo Diesel? Probably not.

But if I had purchased the 3.7l and gone with the LPG conversion, I would not hesitate.
