Greetings! First off I wanted to thank everybody that contributes to this forum! A year ago I never envisioned myself building my own rv but after several months of research, I've convinced myself I can do it. Initially I started with the intent of buying a used class b rv. I was surprised at how expensive 10+ year old models were. That evolved into buying a pre-2007 (T1N) Sprinter and converting it. Research showed the T1N would run forever but rust could be a problem. Since I did not want to put a lot of time, $ and effort into a conversion just to see it rust out within a few years, I decided to look into the Transit. The good folks here have a lot of positive things to say about the Transit. The wealth of information available on this forum has given me several design ideas already.....so begins my search for a used, HR, Extended Transit!:)

Welcome. Transit is a great van. You may also want to look at the ProMaster. Either way you will learn a lot and have a great deal of satisfaction in building your own. I would be happy to answer any questions you have. It's what I do everyday.

Ahhh, the thinsulate guy! Thanks for the welcome Hein! Your name has popped up a lot during my research (on several different forums) over the past several months. Appreciate your contributions. Haven't decided yet if I will go the thinsulate or foam route but right now I'm trying to determine which vehicle to get. I'm pretty sure I want a high roof, extended transit with preferably the 3.5 engine but used 3.5s are a lot harder to come by than the 3.7s. Will have to do a little more research to determine if the 3.7 would suffice. Thanks again!

For us, the 3.5 vs 3.7 decision came down to torque.
We live and travel in the mountain west. We felt that the 3.5's wide torque band was much preferable to high-reving the 3.7 every time we go up a hill.

Thanks for the input skagitstan. I have read your entire building Annie thread and found it to be a great resource. Love your part of the country (my brother lives off of 20 just west of world famous Sedro Woolley!). It will surely be one of my destinations when I complete my build.

Welcome! We searched for a used HR Transit for several months and eventually bit the bullet for a new Quigley Transit. The 3.7L is an excellent engine, good power and excellent fuel economy for a very large box. We got the 3.5L for the reasons noted above by Skagitstan. If you are patient, searchtempest.com gives you nationwide access to all of craigslist. Also, there are several commercial sites like cars.com that give you nationwide access. Good luck!

Thanks Timetogo! Been primarily using searchtempest and cargurus for my search. Cargurus is nice because in addition to 150, 250 or 350, it lets you narrow your search further according to roof height and length. First thing on my to do list this spring is to construct a parking pad next to my garage.....going to need a place to store the beast!!!
