I am designing my van interior in my head at the moment. After taking a one week trip in a Roadtrek which was 22 feet long it occurred to me that perhaps the use of space was not optimal. Because the bathroom was right across from the sink my wife and I could not pass each other in that narrow space at the same time, etc. Also, it was feeling a bit claustrophobic. So I looked for the information on the psychology of small spaces and found information on it related to prisons. Apparently it has been determined that two person confined in a small space need 58 square feet of floor space. So I determined to figure out how to maximize floor space. What I came up with may not be practical, so if anyone has real experience, I would love feedback. What I envision would provide a full size bathroom, full size kitchen, full size bedroom..... etc just not all at the same time.

I envision paneling on both sides of the van interior to give full covered wall storage behind it for items with an interior of perhaps 6-8 inches. The van would look like an open box with nice paneling everywhere.

Then there would be dropdowns for a bed platform, kitchen countertop, seating, etc. Even the shower would be hidden and only take up floor space when used. I would use one of those 12/110V ice/chest freezers which could double for seating and portable appliances for cooking that would be stored behind the paneling drop-downs.

It sounds like a lot of intricate carpentry work which are skills I do not possess, but other than that, would this work?

It may just be me, but I'd get very sad in a closed box without windows for daylight.

No, it is not just you. It is also my wife .... after I showed her pictures of the Transit cargo van last night. I think I could accommodate windows in my design and still retain most of the storage and drop-down capability, but certainly not the wrap around windows ... I don't think so anyway. Thanks for the insight.

What about HD cameras with HD screens on the sides to simulate windows and provide a view and security?

I just checked with Scotty. As long as the dilithium crystals are intact and the warp core is on-line, you're good to go.
