Hi all
This is my first post. I have owned my Transit for 1 week and and ready to start pimping it out as a video production vehicle. I have so many question and it seems that the best practice is to create a new topic for each one so others can easily find the information later.
1) I want to install an alarm to protect my equipment that will be inside the van. Should I go with the Ford or an aftermarket alarm? 1a) Should I consider installing the alarm myself or get a shop to do it?

Aftermarket will provide better protection of valuables inside the vehicle. Additions like motion, tilt, and shock sensors can be added. Additionally some can provide cellular links to inform you that the alarm has been triggered. As for the do it yourself, alarm systems can be simple or complex. It depends on the vehicle. I would say that a professional should be used if you have never done it yourself. Trying to integrate the features into the existing vehicle can be somewhat complex.

Heath,

When I was much younger, I had a Dodge Tradesman that I hauled my motor cycles in, to various races. One day I bought a real nice alarm system for it and installed it. Worked great, even had the mercury switches for any movement. (that's how long ago it was, they were the newest thing) Parked it outside bedroom window. Next morning went out to get things ready, turned off alarm, opened slider, my alarm system was neatly laid out like it had come from the box. On top was a grade sheet, giving me a B - for install. One of the smart azz kids in the neighborhood letting me know my skills were lacking. Took it to a installer, never had a problem after that, other than the A + written on the front windshield with soap. Guess it was a good thing I helped the kids in the neighbothood fixing things and coaching their various teams :D

Hey Heath,

I recently purchased a Transit cargo van (low roof 130") to use for my video production vehicle as well. I'm in the process of trying to beef up security and I'm curious what you ended up doing for your alarm system? Also, did you add any other additional deterrents (locks, partitions, etc)? Any advice you can share would be super valuable to me.

Thanks Heath!

Max
