I am trying to build a carport in my driveway.

Most of those car canopies are just way too ugly...

I saw this one product called Palram Vitoria Carport

http://www.amazon.com/Palram-Vitoria-Carport-Patio-Cover/dp/B00ID8I436

16x10x8' at $1,999 Obviously too small....

Anyone knows where I can get similar model for our beloved Transit?

Mine is regular length with medium roof height. Roughly 8'.12'x18'.25"x8'4"

I like the look of that unit, as well. I had seen it in my own searching. I suppose you could make the wider one taller... either by making or commissioning leg extenders, or by pouring elevated footers (using tubular concrete forms available at Lowe's). But, 16 feet is pretty short. I'd like a foot or two of extra length at each end.

MY problem is that I'm out of room for a legal-permitted permanent structure. I've looked at the temporary, cloth covered structures, which I could get away with. They're all ugly. Now, I'm thinking of designing my own steel structure (I am a backyard welder), with a bit of arch to the roof, like the carport you've shown, but covering it with a custom made, high quality polyvinyl tarp. It would come out looking pretty good, and still be a "temporary" structure.

My only issue with the ShelterLogic ones is that unless you anchor the poles somehow, a strong wind will turn it into a post-modern art sculpture. I have seen YouTube vids of people getting around this by bolting the anchors onto 2x6 boards, and anchoring those boards to the ground somehow (if the canopy is going to be on cement or asphalt, cement anchors come to mind.)

If a hailstorm involves wind I'm not certain a tall, flexible structure with slip joint connected vertical struts and a decent approximation of an airplane wing for a roof is what I'd want to be parking my van under. Just sayin...

The "temporary" carport I weld up myself will be much sturdier than "permanent" commercial offerings.

We had car wash bays setup with them and attachable tarps to act as complete walls and when it got windy you can be it was unstable, it think we even had some bars bend because of that.

Sorry to bring this old thread up but I'm curious as to where people are storing their MR transits?

I'm going to be building this in the next few weeks let me know what you guys think? It's going to be attached to the side of my house next to the garage. I'm open to ideas. Just want to protect my investment, or depreciating investment.

That's the most logical kind of add on to do, as long as you're not going to be hindered by building codes. I'd recommend leaving some extra space on the sides and ends.

Luckily I'm out here in the woods so that won't be an issue. Eddie how are you storing yours?
I'm #3 in this thread... haven't done anything but start clearing space. My plan is to weld up a custom steel bolt-together frame that could be disassembled, with custom heavy polyvinyl cover... permanent, yet legally "temporary," since I have no place for a permanent structure.

You probably know this, but, with your carport attached to the existing structure, you can probably eliminate the posts on the one side -- instead, have a ledger board lag-bolted into the existing structure, then use "joist hangers" to support rafters running to the outside, which does have posts.

I think this is great.

I just don't want to go through getting permits from the city...

LA costs something like more than $500 to just get the permit I think...

Sigh...
