I'm old school- I plan on changing at 5,000 no matter what the OLM says- but it would be interesting to know what it thinks.....
I'm deliberately NOT resetting mine as I want to see when it does come on what the mileage is.

I did my first oil change at 3,000 and am going to do it every 5,000 from here on out.

In hindsight I wish I hadn't reset the IOLM to see when it does come on. I'm going to do like you and not reset it next time. Let us know what your mileage is when it does come on.

Brittles and Budsky -- If you do a vehicle health report on a Sync system, then log into your account on the Ford site (might be a second setup for the Sync, can't recall), it will give you an idea of when your oil change should be. 10,000 intervals seems typical, for normal driving. If you have warranty probs. with the engine, not resetting the monitor might be an issue... as would be NOT having receipts for oil changes you've done yourself.

I did my first at 5K, and will figure on continuing with 10K intervals.

The way it was explained to me is that the van calculates this based on 2 things: actual oil analysis and mileage. If this is correct, then the change oil alert would come on even if the oil is still good after a certain number of miles. And this seems to be 10k.

Has anyone waited to change the oil till the van said to do it? What mileage did it come on?

There is no actual oil analysis in the Ford system. I can only imagine what a sensor system for that would cost!

In my old GMC van they used a pressure differential sensor that turns the light on when the pressure drop across the filter exceeds a certain threshold.

I don't know if it is or isn't. That is what I have been told.

However, a system like this cannot be too complicated, or expensive. My 2004 Sprinter has it. One time I added a quart of oil and to my surprise the miles to service went up by about 2000 miles if my memory serves me. Also, when I reset the reminder after an oil change I get 10k miles remaining. But with my type of driving (expediting) I drive between 14 and 15k miles before the system tells me that I need to change the oil. So obviously some kind of oil analysis is going on.

Are we sure the base model Transit has it? My gauge cluster has ONE button..It switches from Trip ODO to Fuel Range.

I'm over 8,000 miles on the original oil and starting to get nervous that it will never turn on the light. Then again I'm also too busy to change the oil unless it nags me.

I just bought a new Transit EB. Build date 5/2015. Current mileage: 58. That's right under 100 miles (if I'm reading this thing right). So let's say I put about 1500 mile between now and time for a long summer trip starting mid-June.

Do you think the computer will say: change oil 5/2016 (1 year)? Or wait awhile longer?
Do you think there is a strong case to change oil before embarking on a 2500 mile trip (one way)?
I either need to change it before leaving, or I need to wait until I arrive (in Oregon)...which I estimate to be at 3500-4000 mi, late June.

I'm reminded of vehicles with an "idiot light" for temp instead of a gauge. By the time the idiot light came on, your engine was already damaged.

Also, since I drank the kool-aid for a different turbo vehicle, I'm pro full-synthetic. So for 1st change (and beyond), I want to baby this baby, with something better than Motorcraft semi-synthetic. Any upside to using Trop-artic or Kendall. ( all 3 Conoco-Phillips, though I suspect there is a good-better-best situation)..assuming still considerably cheaper than M1, which supposedly meets the -946 Ford spec? $30 for 6 quarts of M1 wouldn't be a killer. With no experience (before now, of NEW turbo engine, there is also the notion that you shouldn't go full-synthetic too soon...for some reason. So I might be willing to do semi-syn for 1st change.

The IOLM will light at one year if the other conditions have not yet been met. IOW park it for a year and then start it up with no miles it should light. Which makes sense because even mileage based recommendations fro vehicles with no oil life monitor usually recommend a year or less even with 0 miles.

Any notion of not using full synthetic too soon is misguided- a number of vehicles come with synthetic as the factory fill.
The Ford spec for the two gas engines does not require synthetic.
The diesel does, sort of, the 5w-40 weight oil specified for the diesel is synthetic, nobody makes anything else. They also allow 5w-30 if you are not using any biodiesel but I have only found one 5w-30 that meets the Ford WSS-M2C171-E spec. Ford themselves doesn't even sell it.

Ok , thanks. Like MoFoCo, I have Base model, so wasn't even sure if I had the monitor. What other monitors are there (on base model)? Transmission fluid? Brake Fluid? Battery? What are likely time / mileage limits on those? Sorry if all this is in the manual.

I did a vehicle heath report via Sync at 4,900 miles and it reported my oil life to be at 33%. So essentially, if nothing changes, I would expect the idiot light to come on just before 15,000. Probably a bit long for the first oil change.
