I park my van in a garage and don't like the idea of the garage door opener hanging on the sun visor. Easy to break in and steal opener to later rob you. I like the more permanent homelink that comes on many vehicles from the factory. So I picked up a homelink transmitter on eBay. Just need to tap into a 12v power and ground then program it.
I didn't know where I was going to put it until that plastic cover on the windshield behind the rear view mirror presented itself as the source of an annoying rattling over every bump in the road. So I killed two birds with one stone and installed the homelink transmitter and put some foam in there to stop the rattling. Both objectives were a success.
Here is the transmitter without the face plate. I didn't take any pictures before. But it came with a light grey cover to which I painted with Krylon fushion black paint. I soldered the wires and shrink tubed, with spade connections on the other end.
Marked out the location on the back side.
Stepped drill bits are great!
Transmitter secured with 3M VHB tape
Tapped into constant 12V behind mirror with Posi-tap connectors
