Ford Sued Over EcoBoost Design Problems, Engine Flaws
Limp home mode is a feature in all cars. If the Computer sees something that has the potential to cause engine or transmission damage it will cut power to keep it from happening. You can still drive it to a safe place, but it won't allow full power.I think my point may have been missed. My point was that the Transit ecoboost engine enforced a limp home mode when it thought it had a problem.
My perspective is that LHM is worse than the underlying problem, and very dangerous and annoying. I had thought only MB did this, but now I find that Ford is as well. I was excited about the Transit ecoboost, but this changes my thinking, knowing that I can't avoid the LHM "feature" with it.
Also, FYI, the dealer here in Portland did not represent the Ecobbost stalling issue as resolved. I asked him about it on Friday during my test drive.
I need more info on the diesel, but the dealer wasn't as knowledgeable about it. He did not know whether it has LMH or not. It would still be interesting to drive and compare vs. my test drive Friday.
Anyone have any information about whether the Transit Diesel engine has the limp home mode behavior?
The minor problem with this wonderful method of saving the engine is that it can kill you and others. I was passing cars on a two lane road with cars approaching from other direction. Just completed the pass and got back into my lane and the Sprinter went into LHM. Could have been a major problem had it occured seconds earlier. Screw the engine, I would rather save myself. OK to display a light but not OK to reduce power.Limp home mode is a feature in all cars. if you are interested in 'saving yourself', why would you risk passing cars into oncoming traffic using a slow-as-a-turtle sprinter? wait till the lane is fully fully clear? The minor problem with this wonderful method of saving the engine is that it can kill you and others. Maybe the slower vehicle was going 25 mph on a 60 mph road, and ahead was clear and very visible? Doesn't take long for a speeding oncoming to suddenly appear, and with the Sprinter performing normally not that big a deal. But thrown into limp home it rapidly becomes one!if you are interested in 'saving yourself', why would you risk passing cars into oncoming traffic using a slow-as-a-turtle sprinter? wait till the lane is fully fully clear?
It was clear with normal engine power. It would not have been clear with LHM. How do you know exactly when the Sprinter will go into LHM? At that time I was not aware that the vehicle would try to kill me and/or others.if you are interested in 'saving yourself', why would you risk passing cars into oncoming traffic using a slow-as-a-turtle sprinter? wait till the lane is fully fully clear?
Ok, so the opposing lane was clear. If you are trying to pass, and the vehicle suddenly goes into LHM, then abort the passing attempt, apply the brake, and safely move back into the laneIt was clear with normal engine power. The bad news is the Transit apparently has the same LHM design.
I have been doing basic driving 101 for 60 years without any accidents with another vehicle. Understand fully how to pass vehicles. Maybe I do not wait to pass vehicles until the opposing traffic is at least a mile away. Two lane roads do not always have extended vision.Ok, so the opposing lane was clear. I really don't see what the big deal is, or how the vehicle is trying to "kill" you.
