Many of us cut up one of these Ikea 3-7/8" thick foam mattresses. This makes a good seat cushion and is comfortable to sleep on.

Initially, I went with 3 inch latex topper only on wooden slats, on top of Ikea rails. I weigh 200, and my wife weighs 120. We could both feel the slats. It didn't bother me, but she did not like it. I then bought two 1.5 inch think camping mats on Amazon. (inflatable Rhino brand). Now it is perfect. Better than our own bed. Ours is bed only in a high roof. We do not use it as a couch
I bought this mattress on Amazon. I have bench seating, which converts to a bed. This seating material already has some give but is relatively firm cushioning material. I added just the 2" mattress topper to it. I roll this up and put it away, so I kept it to the 2" thickness, otherwise 3" would have been more than adequate in my instance.

If I were putting down the mattress permanently on a hard surface a 4" thickness would be a minimum, but might work well. I think the thickness will greatly depend upon the mattress material itself. Ideally a two stage mattress, firm on bottom and softer on top might be ideal. This is why I only needed 2".

This mattress I bought did come in an RV Queen size with might work for many of us size wise and was already covered by a nice cotton quilt material. This brand does have a 4" size available.
4 inch yellow High Density Upholstery foam with 3 inch talalay latex topper is awesome. Have been using this in our travel trailer for the last nine years and did same for our van.
I have a 6” custom latex matress. I sleep on it every day. Seems like it causes pressure points to be honest, I definitely wouldn’t go with 4”. I added a 2” memory foam topper which helped. I’m a bigger guy at 215lbs
we cut up the ikea mattress. it was fine, but wanted a bit more comfort, so I added a memory foam topper from amazon.
If you are doing more than a weekend I'd go 6 minimum. I have a van for sleeping in comfort and to get out of weather. A bed is not the place to be doing the minimum because of space.

We have 2" of upholstery foam under 1" of memory foam as seat cushions that form a mattress in bed mode. Thicker would be better for sleeping but I've been able to sleep just fine on them with a BMI of 25.
We purchased this 6" mattress in a short queen 60x74" as the plan was to sleep east to west and this just fit. We are now setting up to sleep north-south but will still use this as we found it very nice to sleep on.
Yep I am going long term travel… so I am thinking maybe five’’ forsure…I think I recall my old
past camp rigs were 4’’ foam mattress but I was younger then

I did the following from foam factory (top to bottom order):

1" Lux High Quality
3" Medium Latex
2 1/2" Eggcrate
4" Lux High Quality

It's been great to sleep on, but it's also a gigantic heat battery. I'm about to switch to just the latex to see how it sleeps. ...And then I'm building a giant manifold under the bed topped with expanded metal to push hot/cold air through it (the latex has veritical holes in it).
Lucid 5" from Amazon on a solid surface (6mm BB over an aluminum frame). BEST SLEEP EVER.
I will try to look tomorrow on what type was bought from foam factory.
I went with a 4" memory foam mattress. It turned out to be too thin for my weight. I added a 2" memory foam topper. Now I am very comfortable.

I started out with a 3” latex layer from Foam Factory, on top of a 3” Lux HD36 layer. I felt I sunk through the latex to a “too firm” substrate. Swapped out the 3” lux for a 2” medium firmness layer on top of 1” plus 1/2” Lux layers...on top of a pair of waffle/egg crate camping/yoga mats, which are close to the overall 54x80 “mattress” dimensions. So this is approx 6.5” plus the 1/2”-3/4“ camping mats. I have a desire to change again. Thinking: bottom up: camping pads, original 3” Lux layer, 2” medium layer, original 3” latex. So this would be a good 8.5-8.75” thick total with pads…which might be too thick for other reasons…but hopefully not. By the way, the wooden platform is covered with indoor-outdoor pile carpet. I’m pretty sure the 1” Lux plus 1/2” Lux is not as firm as a solid 1.5” layer might be (which is not available; a 2” solid Lux layer might be perfect, but I will try the 3” since I already own it. A new 2” is over $100, plus shipping)

a buddy of mine had memory foam directly on top of his wood platform and in cold climate it molded up badly. I think the carpet layer and “waffle eggcrate“ layer (smooth side up, eggcrate side down) allows for airflow to prevent mold. It works, or maybe my use case is less demanding. It’s possible there was less heavy breathing in mine at night, as there was usually only one sleeper (Not always). He mostly had two…one a lovely Canadian woman. Of course, there might have been a climate difference as well…as they did a lot of freezing / sub-freezing van camping with windows closed, or possibly with a Mr Buddy propane heater, whereas mine is only occasionally used in such temperatures, with a Propex.

note to self, with Bed Bath & Beyond going under, maybe I should check out an alternate source for the “Full XL” size sheets. I have “closet space” along the drivers-side of the north-south bed, as opposed to a full width bed.

I went with 4" of the HD36 High Quality foam in my sofa bed.

Nice support while seated without bottoming. Nice support for side sleeping. A little firm for back sleeping, but I suspect that will improve with time. I'm 230lbs for reference.

If you go with the lower-density regular hd36, you should consider 5" or more. Good luck!

We have been sleeping comfortably on the 4” HD36 HQ regular for 8 years. We are 135 and 155 lbs. We would not want more. I originally bought the 4” LUX, but it was too firm.

At home, I have slept on 6” latex most of my life—my current mattress is 42 years old. We learned in European mountain huts that 4” can be just as good. Thick mattresses are a fraud perpetrated on the gullible American public.

3" LUX-HQ on bottom and 2" firm latex as topper. Super happy. The LUX-HQ is firm so you don't feel whatever is underneath, with the benefit of being lightweight. Latex is the way to go for the top. Don't need/want more than 2", particularly since it's heavy. But you need to choose the firmness you are happy with. I went with SleepEZ since they offered four different levels of firmness for the latex. Many places offer only one.
We got the 8” Simmons mattress in a box from Costco thinking we would just use it temporarily and then put it in one of the kids’ rooms—but it turns out we love it in the van. Very comfortable and easy on the joints. Plus we have plenty of headroom so don’t need to go with a thinner mattress.
