Floor width with Rear AC

Couple of questions about the Front and Rear AC option. In photos, I see a hump sticking up behind the left rear wheel well. Will this hump interfere with loading sheetrock or plywood between the wheel wells?

I'm talking about sliding the sheetrock straight from the back to the front without having having to lift it over anything.

What about it interfering with sliding a pallet in from the back?

Good catch bigbangtech,

Can you attach the photo, and is it in a cargo Van or passenger Wagon? I went back and looked through my dealer brochure, and sure enough there is a shot of suitcases in the back of a Wagon, and a gray housing at the left floor which definitely looks like it is part of the interior finish.

In the online brochure, on p. 10/30 the same grey box is clear on the right of the page, in the back of a low roof Wagon, and it looks like the box definitely intrudes into the "clear space" between the wheel wells in which we would all want to slide 48" wide material for just the reasons you say.

I would guess-timate that the gray box intrudes 4-6" into the "clear space" based on previous Ford van experience, but the rear door width of the 2015 Transits is very wide, so it is hard to be definite on this.

The cargo Van photos do not show a box like this.

Hmmmmm.

I noticed for the Wagon version. If you go to build a Wagon, any style or model, and get to the interior section, you will see an interior photo with the box in the left rear corner.

Most Wagons have front&rear AC standard, while it is an option for cargo Vans, so it could cause a problem for Vans too.

There is an AC prep package for $100 that deletes the ac controls, but I don't know if it keeps that hump in the back or not. Ford chat people didnt have an answer.

Also, does anyone know where to get inexpensive flip/foldaway seats to go behind the driver and over the rear wheel hump? Too bad Ford doesn't have a Crew Van version like Sphincter.
"Too bad Ford doesn't have a Crew Van version . . . "

Agreed. They will eventually probably?

The interior cargo width between the wheel wells in a Wagon is said to be 53.7" so the gray hump could intrude into the center "clear space" by quite a bit, and still allow 48" wide material to squeeze by it (tight to the right wheel well bulge), but it would take a close inspection of an actual wagon to verify. Hopefully you wouldn't have to angle a 4x12 sheet to get by the hump.

Do I sense some undiplomatic monikers getting ready to hit the blogosphere?

"What a hump!"
See new photo which shows the conundrum clearly here:

The dealer in Schenectady NY has a wagon in stock. Anyone live nearby?

Rear A/c in Cargo Van

What will the rear A/C heat option be like in cargo van? Ford chat session told me to contact my dealer. My dealer has no clue and couldn't order a sheet of plywood correctly. Why is this van so top secret?

Yeah... For the van I'll be converting I'm potentially interested in the rear AC option, depending on what it is, how it is implemented, and what kind of trades it imposes.

There are a lot of things I need more information on.
Ditto to A/C Guy and Brad about Ford keeping the local dealers in the dark about this and many other issues. Did you guys see the excellent photo posted by kingkabong in the other thread?

It is hard to imagine the rear A/C unit being located differently in the cargo van version IMO, but stranger things have happened I guess. Even if you can squeeze sheets of plywood between the A/C hump and the right wheel well, the hump is sure going to get trashed in a van used for construction every day.

Hopefully someone will be able to check out an actual van soon and measure things up.
Regarding the A/C hump in the back.
When I was thinking about a Sprinter, I didn't like the roof top A/C that you could get.
Found a Sprinter upfitter that offered an alternative. He installs a Frigiking 916 at the interior rear roofline. Combination A/C & heater. Believe the condensor and leaking water was below the vehicle, dripping onto the road.

I'm guessing the same type of set-up could be put in the Transit, leaving the floor area open for hauling full size sheets of plywood or anything else.

Semper Fi
Roadtrek has its A/C there, and it always seemed like superior location, and great to separate the units with the air handler 1/2 in the van. [not sure if RT does that] The resulting roof line is clean with overall height reduced I believe.
The Michigan sales rep. aaron will be checking on the hump next week according to his recent post. Thanks aaron.

Great link Rico, thanks. The video reveals that from the grey hump at left with rear A/C housing to the jack is 53", and it appears to these eyes that the right wheel well sticks protrudes more than 5" toward the center of the floor, compared to the jack (based not only on this video but other photos posted recently including kingkabong's in the "rear seating" thread). Admittedly this is a guess-timate.

In any event, it looks close as to whether you can slide a sheet of plywood flat on the floor between the A/C left grey hump and the right wheel well. The Michigan sales rep. aaron is supposed to post on this in a day or two.

PS -- If you click on "Town Livery Vehicles" below the video, there are other Transit videos they have prepared for their channel.

Correction -- at time stamp 1:26 to 1:32 in the video above, the distance between the rear A/C hump and the jack is only 50" so it is unlikely IMO that a sheet of plywood would lie flat on the floor between the A/C hump and the right rear wheel well housing.

ah good mention. seems like you're right.
See this thread for more details on the rear A/C grey hump, room for 48" ply to sit flat on floor, etc..
