On every bump in the road, that overhead compartment rattles up and down. Seems like it's too flexy in the middle, I'm tempted to screw a piece of aluminum flatbar across the front, anybody else tried to quiet this thing down?

Touch it to dampen, and find out what part may benefit from stabilizing. I had an infrequent, minor noise in mine. When I touched the mount above the driver seat, it would stop. I thought I might have to do something with it (small wedge, zip-tied splint, etc.)... but, it stopped on its own.

I had a rattle coming from the loose cab lighting assembly on the underside of the main shelf. It got so bad I unclipped and removed the light housing, inserted 1x2 foam packaging blocks, and clipped the box back on. It worked so well I never gave it another thought till I read your post.

All good solutions...yeah it's mostly the stuff I put in there that rattles, but it wobbles up and down like crazy. Either needs stiffening along the front edge or to be connected to the ceiling.

I'm guessing those rectangular holes in the middle are the right size for a single-DIN CB or stereo head unit. Maybe it just needs some heavier gadgets in there!

Watch out that thing doesn't crash down on your head! Seems a bit flimsy, especially in the middle.

My solution is to punch the **** out of it a few times...seems to work more often than not.

I considered putting a light brace from the shelf to the ceiling baffle.
Maybe some day.

Mine is rattling and squeaking like crazy. Looked at the side two anchor points and a screw was missing! I added a screw, no change, but now I have an additional rattle on the other side. Can't seem to win. I'm going to mention it once I find some time to send it in for the recent recall. It's going to drive me insane if they can't/won't fix it.

Woe is me

Brought the van in for the 15B39 recall as well as to have them look at the rattling. Also to look at the dome light assembly not being flush. Any one have this issue? Anyway came back in and they said that the clips were broken in the dome light and that it would cost me $1000 to replace. It didn't seem that bad and something I could very well DIY to fix. Got in the van and the the whole assembly is all askew! Yeah the clips are broken. They broke it! I guess in trying to pull it off they broke the clips and one side hangs about an inch from where it's supposed to be. Went back and threw a quiet fit. So disappointed. They also forgot to order the parts for the recall. Lose lose for me.

Sucks. Another dealer service horror story. I didn't realize how bad dealer service could be, but, I would not have to be pretty desperate, and over my head, to go in for dealer service. And, that certainly includes routine service, like oil changes... something the dealership actually wants.

Simple Shelf Modification

I spanned a 2" width x 57" length of 3/4 ply across my overhead shelf to stabilize it.

It serves a dual purpose: It acts as a stabilizing bridge at the unstable mid point, and it provides a better lip to contain items therin.

The latter issue is of particular utility if you have the EB and are tired of seeing airborne articles fly by overhead at green lights.

If it is successful I will paint it up and make it permanent.

My shelf is flimsy but does not rattle.

To keep items in the shelf with the fun EB, I put a 5' bungy cord across the front. Hooked it into the front support arm. Put a piece of wood in the arm slot to keep the bungy hook up high in the slot. Seems to work.

I guess I'm sort of lucky ?

I have a modified "monkey bar / roll bar" that goes across mine, about 2" up from the bottom. It's a grab bar type of set up that covers the whole shelf area to help me move around. Keeps everything on the shelf in place. Also runs about 3/4 of the way back in the Transit.

How did they secure it? There's not a lot of options up there.

jonsobi,

It's a roll bar configuration, anchored with vertical support poles behind the front seats and behind the slider door (both sides). They are connected with horizontal beams along the drivers side and the middle roof area. There is also a horizontal beam just below window height on the drivers side ( I use it to help transfer and pull myself around.

jonsobi,

Independence !

After 2 + years of being stuck in my house waiting for this vehicle, it could have major flaws as long as it got me out and about on my own.

But having said that, it is great. There are a few things Ford could have done better ( a GM type of tire pressure monitor - that actually shows the pressure in each tire, constantly, a little more room to put legs in so I don't have to keep them tucked out of the way, power folding mirrors, I have 1 1/2 " on either side on garage doors, etc)

I've got a list of improvement and modifications for my up fitter to make things a little easier for me and to be able to secure things (suit cases and storage bins, when traveling or going to the store, a place to put grocery bags so they don't slide and spill :( ) A lot of little things that wouldn't matter to someone able to get around without restrictions, but would help me. Know it's gong to cost me $ though.
