We are considering buying a used 2016 with about 20,000 miles. The dealer said that he can extend the warranty (bumper to bumper and drivetrain) to 8 years/100,000 miles for about $1600. I think it seems a little too good to be true. Is it really that easy and cheap to extend it? Anything I should be wary of?

I have the extended warranty to 150,000 miles. It may say bumper to bumper & drivetrain, but it still doesn't cover everything. I had a temperature sensor go out and it wasn't covered - $250 +/-. At 70,178 the guibo - rubber connector between the drive shaft and rear axle - was cracked (lots of threads on this). Even with the extended warranty, it still cost me $100 deductible.

My advice - bank the $1,600 you would spend on the warranty. If you have any repairs pull from that, and most likely you'll still be ahead of the game. Unless your Transit has hidden damage or is a lemon I've found mine to be pretty much trouble free. Regular oil changes at 10,000 miles (mine's a diesel). Rear brakes, temperature sensor and now the guibo; need new tires soon, but otherwise trouble free. That's putting on almost 60,000 miles in a 12 month period.

lhill,

Appears you are still in the manufacturers warranty coverage so you should be able to purchase an extended warranty. Here is a link with some info. Check out Lombard Ford up in CT with the online link. They sell the extended and maintenance warranties. I believe they are the #1 dealer in selling these so they offer a discounted price. You can take their price to your dealer and ask him to match it, since he will be doing the work anyway. If he won't, buy it elsewhere and still have him do the work.

Mine was $1,960.00 for both a 6 year, 60,000 mile, $0. deductible warranty & a 6 year 75,000 mile, $0. deductible maintenance warranty. My dealer opted to match and get a little profit rather than doing the work and getting none.

Previously, I found that after filling in the vehicle info with Lombard, online, they send a special extra discountoffer via e-mail. So it turns out being even less than they originally quote. You can pick what type of coverage to fit your needs.

If I expected a $1600 repair on my Transit, I would not have bought the van.

They push extended warranties so hard everywhere because they have all the statistics that show chances are very low that you will come out ahead.

If it makes you feel good, spend the money, but it is rarely a sound financial decision.

I purchased a third party extended warranty for my F350 and used it. When I traded it in on my F150, I still had some of the extended remaining so they transferred it to the F150. When I bought the T250 they just added it to the policy as a second vehicle and it cost very little. The only thing I've ever paid for, (including rental vehicles), were two batteries for my F350 after I cracked both of them doing a little crazy off roading.

The reason I got rid of it was because the tranny was going out and Ford would not cover it because I had the true 40" Toyo tires on it. FYI, 35's are really 33-1/2 and Ford has no problem with them because the ECU/ECM can accommodate them.
