Double din dash kit

Hopefully they finally made one. I just ordered this and I'll let you all know if it works right. My plans are a double din kenwood with gps. This kit comes with the upper trim piece too.

Can the stock backup camera be used with the replacement radio?

Jam,

That's the radio I went with in my econoline. I really loved it, sad to sell it with the van. It's what I will try to add to my transit when it gets here. I'll be watching your radio posts. Please do a write up and share it.

Thanks for the info hammerhome. I'll def post pics and info when I get it. Been super busy with work so it may be a while. Heck, I still have the single din dash piece I ordered from ford when I bought my van and still haven't used it lol.
I have been waiting patiently for this piece to come out. Fingers crossed.

Well just a quick update. Got an email today from the place I ordered the dash kit from and said Metra doesn't have them out yet. They said could be a couple weeks tho. I'm also wondering that even though it is a double din piece, will I have enough room behind the dash to fit a double din?

Jam7, did you receive your kit yet? I am curious to how this works out as well. Especially after reading some of the other older threads that were talking about a double din install not being possible.

The Southeast Sales Rep for Metra is an old friend of mine. I am trying to get into contact with him to answer some of these questions. I have many of the same questions, as well as how to handle the backup camera screen.

Location for installing a radio

Having NO expertise in radio's, I have a question to ask.

I have looked at the on-line picture of the Metra replacement for the OEM radio.

Take a look at my previously posted picture of the area under the center console shroud, Thread included below. It appears the area beneath the metal shelf (under the cupholder area) has nothing below it, possibly due to the plastic shelf area in the shroud, just above the floor.

If my presumption is correct, couldn't a premium radio of any size, be mounted under that metal shelf (and attached to it) by cutting a hole in the shroud above the plastic floor shelf? And having the face plate mounted even with the front of the upper cupholder area?

I know some of you have installed radios for a living, previously, and some of you are very talented DIY'ers, what do you think? Just drop the wiring down and connect.
That would put a radio in easy reach of driver and passenger and somewhat out of view of those on the outside looking in.

Yes it would be quite easy to do but seeing the display may be the issue. You'd be almost directly above it. I know with seat all the way back I can't see that pocket but directly under the shelf might be an option.

The good thing about that is you can leave the original radio and even keep it powered up for clock and the plastic below would be easy to find and replace if you ever wanted to sell it.

A wiring harness could be extended like you said and be connected. If you're moving into the rear you may rip off buttons trying to slide by it but you could just be careful.

I may do this myself. Good idea. I'm gonna add a subwoofer when I get off my lazy behind. That would make it easier with an aftermarket unit.

The angle of the plastic might be an issue but if you mount it good it will be fine.

I'm thinking you could even angle the radio to face up a bit so that the display could be seen, unless of course you get one with a Nav system, then it might be kind of unsafe to be looking down that much. But for a normal radio and most come with a remote, or at least some do, for operating it.

And if you leave the original, you can also use the back-up camera in the OEM slot.

I have removed that entire assembly when I added sound deadening. You would need to build it out a little for the depth of an aftermarket radio. It is possible, but a ton of work.

There are many different options to improve sound quality. There are all kinds of interface modules to gain better outputs and just run AMPs with better speakers. From my perspective it is the integrated on screen controls and features such as Apple Car Play, DVD control for the rear entertainment, Map display etc. The requires a dash mount for this.

Hawkeng is right. Under the cup holder the front of the housing dips in too quickly to totally enclose the radio, especially a double din unit. But you could always cut the hole and use a strap type mount similar to hanging a gas tank and leave the underside of the radio exposed.

You wouldn't see it and it wouldn't affect anything. The sides would need to be covered in order to hide the aluminum color vs the black plastic of the dash.

I just finished speaking with the Rep from Metra. The dash kit that is completed is only for vehicles without the 4.2" screen. They are still trying to integrate into the software interfaces on the databus for the screen.

Does anyone know what the mounting depth is for installing a double din unit with this Metra kit? After reading some other threads people were making it sound like a normal depth double din unit was not possible. I already have a pioneer double din dvd receiver I'd like to install when my new 2016 transit cargo comes in.

Checking in on this one, has anyone successfully installed a double din yet? I'm getting ready to do audio and it would help, I hear it's backordered from the dealer, and not sure if any of the third party solutions are out yet.

I saw a couple threads on single din units, are folks happy with these? Are they easier to get? Maybe I'll suffer with single din for awhile, man I really need to do something about the POS stock entry-level unit. Man does it SUCK, and there's no back speakers.

I'm also waiting for someone to post a detailed write up with pics of a double din install using the Metra 99-5832G kit. If someone else doesn't do it first I will post my install when our Transits come in sometime this month.

Local stereo shop says Scosche now has a double-din solution, but I can't find a part no online. Perhaps it's only for dealers. He claims its available now. I think he might be mistaken and thinking of the Connect, but he insists it'll work in my T250.
