Ort, I'll look around, interesting question.

At a quick glance, it seems that going inverter to charger is substantially more expensive in the 50 amp range. But then you can charge from shore power which is an advantage. I never have shore power so it doesn't work for me.

@orton, I have been poking around a little and as far as I can see I haven't found a dc to dc charge controller design that actually uses AC in the middle. It all seems to be chopped DC with only positive pulses in respect to ground. Real AC would have a center tapped transformer and the waveform would go negative relative to ground.

None of that is really relevant to the discussion here as it makes no real difference but you had gotten me wondering about the circuit design and I thought I'd let you know.

I'll build my next battery using Lithium Battery LiFePO4 3.2V Cells and a Battery Management System with Low Temperature Charging Cutoff.
