I have a very irritating occasional clunk when I leave a stop. If I come to a stop sign and barely stop, when I hit the gas there is a tiny delay and a clunk from the rear when it finally gets going. If I come to a complete stop and sit for a bit it does not clunk. If I use manual shift and put it in first gear as I approach a stop there is no clunk.

It seems like the trans has a delay dropping into first and when it does it makes a clunk in the rear. I thought it might be suspension related like axle wrap or whatever but any attempts to get a clunk from the rear by goosing the throttle doesn't work. Only the partial stop gives the clunk.

Has anyone seen this? Is it just a trait of the Ford trans?

I have this also, just like you describe. Sounds like it's coming from the rear so I don't suspect it to be a transmission issue. I even crawled under to look for any bolts left loose at the factory but didn't notice anything. I'm reluctant to take it in for this so please keep us updated if you do.

It is like you suspect. My F150 does it during the first few miles but then it's fine. The Transit hasn't done it yet.

Just hit the button for manual shift but leave it in drive then do your rolling stop. You'll see it in 2 then bang it drops to 1.

My 2010 f150 developed the pull away clunk at 2 years. Turned out to be a dry spline where the Dshaft connects to the transmission. The dealer re lubricated it under warranty as there was a TSB on the issue. Problem never returned.

They tried that with mine but it didn't fix it.

My 2000 half ton e-van at 12,000 miles when I got it. Mentioned movement and slight clunking when it was at the dealer. No it's fine you're wrapping leaf springs you're putting a wrap on them.
So, six months later the exhaust system is getting warranty and as you're trying to get it off the whole motor and transmission assembly shift. Lo and behold the bolts for the transmission mount on the crossmember are missing. They were never there. There was no wear marks or what not where the bolts should have been.

No clunking or movement after the bolts were installed where the assembly line should have put them.

My 2012 F150 did that. Makes you want to hammer it and let something come apart. It is annoying for sure.

I'd bother them to try and re-train the transmission.

They had a patch for the 2012 transmissions that helped it drop gears quicker. But my 6 spd in my 2012 was nothing special, very lagged feeling at what you explain as a partial stop. Always a gear too high. And that contributes to the clunk feeling.

My transit seems to predict the gears very well and downshifts very easily so when I apply the throttle its quicker to go. Which I think may an ecoboost thing to compensate for the turbo lag. It's always like a mild version of the tow haul.
