Following up from the MyFord Touch thread . . .

what is the slot right underneath the touch screen???
i bought a 2015 transit van from my local ford dealership, and it has the MFT on it. can anyone tell me what that slot is underneath the touch screen? i don't know what it does, and it doesn't say it in the owners manual
Thanks for the photo Alicia. I have a few questions to make sure we are all reading from the same page. Some may seem irrelevant or redundant, but just to make sure we have the basic facts locked in, please bear with me. As you may know Ford is now in the middle of changing the MyFord Touch ("MFT"), and you may have an earlier MFT version (depending on when your van was built), or another radio altogether IMO:

1. What makes you say this radio is MFT? Could you please double check your window sticker, and maybe post an image of it? The following tool should pull up your window sticker, from your VIN, if this is easier than taking a photo of it.

http://researchmaniacs.com/Ford/TrackFactoryCarOrders.html

2. At the top of your window sticker, what is the date in the center, above the blue border? It should start with "012014" and have a date after that. What numbers come next? This will help us determine when your van was actually built.

3. Could you take another close-up photo, with the screen illuminated? The MFT in the following video (granted, from a 2015 Explorer) looks much different than yours (time stamp 0:35).

Note the SONY brand name at the bottom, and the words "Insert NAV SD Card" at the top right. When you scroll through the various options on your touch screen, do you see a similar instruction about inserting such a card? Is this what the slot is for?

Is there a brand name anywhere on your radio?

4. In addition to your Transit Owner's Manual, did you receive any separate manual for the radio? I believe that all MFT radios come with their own dedicated manual. If you do not have such a manual, maybe you could ask the dealer if it is missing. It seems unusual for a dealer stock van to have the MFT, in my opinion. What other options does the van have (was it "loaded," in other words)?

5. Does your van have the Crew Chief to which orton referred? I don't believe this system involves the use of a driver card, as the manufacturer's site refers to a black box that goes under the dash.

6. Perhaps camarina73 and bobojay are correct?

camarina is correct. Someone asked the same question at the ride & drive I attended.
They said credit cards or whatever for the van businessman, parking passes, etc, etc.
. . .
7. OK I guess that is enough for now. Depending on what additional information you post, maybe we can figure this out!

Thanks,

Peter

Well that's where my Pilot/Flying J card is going to go. Todays is the reported build date for my van and I saw two low top Transits on the way into work today. Maybe that's a good sign?

Be careful at FJ/Pilot fuel stops. I got water at one in my diesel a few months ago and they denied my claim, says I can't prove it was them. 25 miles after fill up I die with lots of water in my system. $2500 later I was back on the road.

Anyways, after getting the EB in the transit and reading about using only quality fuel on these direct injection motors, I found the very few truck stops are top tier. FJ/Pilot are not top tier so I will not use them if I can help it. They do have good coffee is about all I can say, although service in all respects sucks.

Sorry, got rag on Flying J after going thru that.

Do any of the US models have an airbag on/off display in this location.

I don't have the slot at all.
That's about where my airbag light is. No slot in mine. I have the 4" info screen. Maybe the slot is only on MFT models?

I have the new sync 3 and its an airbag light now. I think that was for updating the MFT, the dealer needs direct access to the unit to update it.

good idea + other question

Yep there is an optional shredder you can get in that slot>:D
I think I meant parking passes / tickets (like at a parking garage), but I like where you are going with that!

Question: What is the difference between the systems with the mysterious slot and those the air bag warning light? I thought the vehicles with the Sync 3 system didn't have the slot, but now I'm seeing otherwise. Not a very important detail, but I'm still curious.

2015 model and older my touch, or whatever it was called, and the newer models (2016 w/sync3, whatever they call it) don't have that shredder slot.
