I asked about this as well with Ford tech support, which stated it is more than just a button, and cannot be added after the fact. I ended up ordering a new Transit as opposed to one on the lot due to this information. But who knows, the tech could have just been saying anything just to get off the phone, it has happened before.

I have the tow haul button. From what I have experienced you could use the manual mode up and down as needed if you did not have it. If you tow a lot I would get the tow haul button, which i've I'm right is a lot more than the button as it is also the wiring package and hitch for the vehicle.

If you don't tow a lot I think you could easily go up and down on the manual gear shifter. It's just easier letting the computer do it with the tow haul mode. But essentially its the same thing. Holds the gears a little longer and down shifts when the brakes come on. It's a nice feature.

wiring harnesses are usually one size fits all because its cheaper to just make one harness. chances are the wires and the plug is there, possibly hooked up and ready to go on the other end. i have saw it before: in the factory service manual for cummins L10 and M9 heavy truck engines 15 years ago, these engines came with several options and all of them were installed on every engine: pto rpm control, engine brake, an electronic passing gear that boosted the hp of the engine for short periods of time and a few other things. all you had to do was add a switch or two and pay 1000s of dollars for those options that were already there!(but this was the early days of big truck ecu, today chances are that you would need to reprogram the ecu)

Tow/haul button firms up the shifts too. Essentially allowing less slippage between the gears. Prolongs the trans life when towing heavy loads. Buttery and smooth under light loads, firm and immediate under heavy loads.

There was talk that the transmission itself had upgraded internals, but I'm skeptical of that.

I used to have a 1971 302 Mustang Grande', my first car, and it had a crap C-4 trans. A friend rebuilt transmissions and put HD brass plates and made it feel like a C-6. The trans is the weakest point of this (or most any) drive train and it would be good to get HD plates if it did not gear it down for me. It would be a strong consideration even if it did gear it down. Too bad you cannot see options' part lists and diagrams. That would be a seriously good option if it was HD trans plates.

From your description, it does sound predominantly mechanical by material differences and not just electrical or programming. It sounds sweet like a whole new model truck. I think that was an option that I wanted before, and want it more now (to extend my trans another 100K miles with positive shifting.) The more I find out about this model, the better it gets.
