Cabin Electric Heater

On page 89 of the owners manual under "C" there is this statement "Turn the temperature control to maximum heat to turn on the auxiliary heater". On page 195 fuse link "H" describes a 80 amp fuse for "Positive temperature coefficient heater"
Does Transit have an electric air heating element for the dash air vents? My 08 Sprinter had a 1000 watt air heater that would start automatically when warm air was selected and would shut off automatically when interior warmed up. I could see when it stopped by the change in volts shown on my Scan Gage. Voltage would jump up 1/2 volt when it turned off.
If I knew how it functioned, I could avoid turning on the "vehicle" powered 1000 watt inverter when Ford heater was operating. Hopefully Ford electric heater is not automatic and only comes on if heat selector switch is at max. setting.

So far the only service manual I've found is from Helminc.com
the Helm manual is complete. It shows absolutely everything about the Transit, including repair procedures. I have a much better understanding of the vehicle. I recommend that you rent access for a week or a month so you can view all the wiring diagrams, repair info, etc.

Old thread I know...but I had a Q pertaining to this topic and found this thread during my search so here goes : )

Peter stated...
Unlikely IMO as orton has a cargo van, without rear heat (I think but am not sure)...
I could not locate an "auxiliary rear heater" option during a recent van build. Is it an option? And if so, would it "Take the chill off the interior" as Orton is hoping below?

I do not know the watts of the Ford heating element ( if there is one)... Just have to use my remote start on a cold morning without starting the inverter. Ford system would still take the chill off the interior.
Orton, a few months into your ownership...Does the system in place in your van "take the chill off the interior" ?? Is there a _from factory_ option that would do so without adding more _stuff_? We are still looking at a cargo version rather than the wagon.

I ask as i'm wondering if starting up the engine (3.5? or 3.7?) for a few minutes and getting some overnight-use amps back in the battery bank and taking the chill off would work?

Pondering. Thanks in advance for any insights!

Thanks for resurrecting this interesting thread. My plan is as per your quote above. I have been told elsewhere on the forum that the stock Transit cabin HVAC has an electric pre-heater element which is indeed useful for quick heating-ups.

Also a 12v blankie is recommended.

I'd like to see some documentation for the electric pre-heater. I've started my Transit many times in sub-freezing conditions and there's no evidence of quick heat in my rig. Anybody got a schematic on that? I haven't seen it mentioned anywhere in Ford manuals or parts lists.

I detailed the electric boost heater operation in this post- http://www.fordtransitusaforum.com/...17073-triple-agm-battery-bank.html#post212081

It is there and it works- at least on my van. It is also mentioned on page 89 of the Owner's Manual under Temperature Control.

The remote start option 68B gives you a separate small key fob that allows you to start the engine from the fob. There is also an additional aerial mounted inside at top of windshield on passenger side to increase the distance capability.

When pressed the 3.5 engine starts and runs for 10 minutes. You set the heater controls the night before for what you want in the morning. I understand that the time can be increased to 15 minutes but my dealer did not know how to do that.

For maximum air heat the temperature control knob must be at the max. setting. That actuates the electric air heater that all Transits have. You get warm air almost immediately before the engine water warms up.

My van is a cargo version and system works as above.

I will not need the charging because I have excessive solar charging with my 300 watt panel. I may be able to add the house 750 watt electric baseboard heater to the heat output powered by the vehicle 12 volt system inverter. That might be too much load on the alternator at idle so may not be possible.

To stay warm at night I use a 12 volt DC heating pad under the bedding. The electrical usage does not change much because the refrigerator runs less in a cold van. That saved refrigerator energy is used by the heating pad.

One of the primary reasons to sell the diesel Sprinter and buy a gas Transit was to obtain the ability to idle the engine for air heating or shower water heating.

Thanks Budsky. I'm going to look at my fuse panel and see if it has a blown PTC fuse. I definitely am not getting any heat until the engine is warm.

The manual is useless. We paid for a subscription to the online manual and were unable to find any references to fuses or fuse panels there. A helpful parts guy at Walnut Creek Ford California spent an hour going through our new van looking for fuse locations and fuses to identify spares for our Central American trip. He found one entire fuse panel not shown in the owner's manual.
Would you say where the fuse panel is located? And what year and type van you have?

I think the owners manual for my 2016 showed five different fuse panel.
I don't believe there is one.

This is the third Winter, and no matter what settings I choose, I don't get warm air out of the vents until my engine temp approaches 140 deg.
I cant understand who came up with the idea that there is an electric heater in the cabin.

There is an electric heater. I use it regularly. If the temperature dial is set fully clockwise, the electric air heater will run until the engine water temperature is high enough to provide warm air. If yours does not function this way then it needs to be repaired.

In the USA there is one.

i live in a place where a really cold night is in the upper 20s, (F) with the temp on max and the fan on max all the heater does is blow cold and the windshield does not start to defrost until the engine is above 120 degrees (if it had electric heat light frost should at least start to melt!)
In the USA there is one.

I didn't believe it either, but there it is, right there on page 89. Never heard of such a thing, especially in a vehicle with such spartan features as mine.

I suspect the reason some think it doesn't work is that we tend to need the windshield defroster at the same time, which runs the A/C by default. Even with the engine temp at normal and defroster on, the air from the vents is just warm.

Any chance posting a photo of the page please?

Its on page 90 of the 2015 manual and 93 of the 2016 manual. There is no actual reference to an electric heater specifically but I think it's safe to assume that is what is meant by auxiliary heater.

From the 2016 manual. Section B is similar in the 2015 manual. Mine does work by the way when I turn on Max A/C and set the temp to Max heat.

Fan speed control: Controls the volume of air circulated in your vehicle. Adjust to select the desired fan speed or switch off. If you switch the fan off, the windshield may fog up.
A
Recirculated air: Press the button to switch between outside air and recirculated air. When you select recirculated air, the button illuminates and the air currently in the passenger compartment recirculates. This can reduce the time needed to cool the interior and reduce unwanted odors from entering your vehicle.
B
Temperature control: Controls the temperature of the air circulated in your vehicle. Adjust to select the desired temperature. If you select MAX A/C, the system distributes recirculated air through the instrument panel air vents. This mode is more economical and efficient than normal air conditioning. Turn the temperature control to maximum heat to turn the auxiliary heater on
C
Air conditioning: Press the button to switch the air conditioning on or off. To improve air conditioning when starting your vehicle, drive with the windows open for two to three minutes.
D
Air distribution control: Adjust to select the desired air distribution

If mine has one. It's broken. And was broken from day 1.

Auxiliary heater could be reffering to the heater for the wagon thats located under the front passenger seat with vents in the back floor.
