The tie down bolts actually appear to be M11-1.25 extra fine thread. That based on measuring the diameter of the tie down bolts and taking one of the bolts to Ace Hardware and trying it on all choices of nuts. However, try to find that bolt size in this universe. I can not. Checking the diameter of the non-threaded nuts on the back door pillar (inside edge, about a foot from floor), they are the correct diameter for a M12-1.25 tap hole (which should be about 10.9 mm). I bought longer M12-1.25 bolts for fastening down my conversion floor. They will not fit the current tapped bolt holes (where tie downs were). However, I got a set of Irwin taps from amazon in M12-1.25 and retapped all the holes and my bolts fit just fine. The unthreaded aft door nuts tapped very easily. Retapping the existing tapped holes was a real bitch (for whatever reason: work hardened metal? dirty existing threads?).

If you are talking about the other small attachment points in the wall, I have not checked yet. Probably M6 or M8.

Any chance the holes are SAE and not metric? Seems like that would be unlikely in this day and age, but who knows?

Maybe could be 7/16 UNF. I am not sure if I checked that size. Definitely not 7/16 UNC. It would fit the evidence also. 7/16 UNF spec is 11.11mm bolt, about 1.27mm pitch, and uses a tap hole at 9.9mm. So, I probably did a lot of work for no reason. Or maybe not.

But then tap hole for 7/16 UNF is 9.9mm while M12-1.25 is 10.8mm. So why did aft pillar non tapped hole tap so well with the M12-1.25 tap? I could believe they put in 7/16 UNF tie down bolts when design really wanted M12-1.25. I did not write down my measurement for aft holes, but I think they started around 10.8 mm, not 9.9 mm.

Does any one know the size of the roof rack attachment blind nuts? I do not want to pull the covers on the outside yet and you can not see the inside due to rib. Are they pre-threaded or just untapped nuts?

Any thoughts as to where to find that info. Ford BEMM and parts manuals have no info that I can find.

Some where on the ford website, there is a downloadable file meant for RV upfitters of the Transit to guide them on where they can drill, not drill, access wires, or alter the construction of the Transits.

On p. 4 click on the p. 135 No-drill zones to go right to that page.

You can peruse the table of contents for other sub-sections containing similar information, and click on these "hot links" leading right to each sub-section.

in the BEMM , on page 248 there is a sentence that specifies M8

section: 5.12.3 Roof Racks and Load Carriers

"* The roof rack should be fixed to the roof using one M8 bolt per attachment."
Do you have a new hard copy of an updated BEMM? The online version I linked above is dated August 2014, and only contains 178 pages, and no section 5.12.3 with the quoted sentence.

Hmmmm . . . ?

What is the date on your BEMM please?

Thanks

Edit -- Mystiko confirms the 8mm bolts here:

Date of Publication: 11/2014, i downloaded it last night from

http://www.etis.ford.com/bemm

best to go to Ford and download from there.
Thanks but that link does not work. This address:

FordEtis home page

Leads here automatically:

https://www.etis.ford.com/home.do

Is this a European site? Currency amounts are stated in Euros, and they mention VAT taxes. Or are you accessing a US Etis site because you have a Transit on order? Perhaps the URL you posted is available to you only because you are logged in?

Thanks for any guidance you might offer.

Edit -- in this thread they are discussing a European BEMM from the Etis site:

Thanks vnehess, in Section 1.1.1 on p. 6, the language suggests that this version of the BEMM is for Australian and New Zealand Transits IMO, so for now I will pass on digging any deeper.

Thanks again for the feedback.

I do see that comment about AU and NZ specifics being added in this version, however i believe this document is intended to cover the the 2014.5 Transit worldwide with country specifics called out in the text and appendixes.

I just noticed that many countries are listed in section 1.3 Contact Information, and USA is not listed, but there is a listing for ROW( Rest of World), which leads me to believe this document is intended to cover all 3rd generation Ford Transits.

In section 1.1.2 it does mention specifically :
"The objective is to use common formats with the workshop manual which is used by technicians worldwide."

Tomorrow i'll type in my VIN and see if the Ford site leads me to this or another document.

failing that I will email [email protected] and ask for a clarification.

Determinative IMO.

There are bound to be many differences in the Transits which are made/sold made in different countries . . . each with its own DOT etc. laws.

The shared similarities do not make a foreign manual helpful, at least to these eyes. Too many unknowns and questions raised. One more guessing game . . .

I imagine that the US BEMM will be updated, after this "full scale model" design process goes into a more mature phase of production with fewer design decisions being made on the fly . . .

One hopes that Ford has learned a lesson here . . .

That's so cute. >:D

Really, I agree with the rest, except I don't know why the Aug 2014 North American BEMM isn't useful.
Of course it is useful, but it is incomplete . . .

Edit -- and the lesson learned comment was about this entire roll-out, not just the BEMM . . .

Edit 2 -- In Post # 8 a link to the 8/14 US BEMM was provided earlier in this thread:

http://www.fordtransitusaforum.com/74969-post8.html

One of many many times I have referred to it for useful information . . .

I did type my VIN number into the Ford ETIS site today, and after agreeing to terms, I was lead this same BEMM version to download.

I now am confident that this is the Worldwide BEMM for Ford Transit (2014.5), and that ROW ( rest of world ) contact information includes the USA.

I'm sure the BEEM will be revised as the rollout continues to add features, it looks like Aug and Nov were the most recent pub dates, so quarterly ?

While there are bound to be differences in vehicles destined for different jurisdictions, there is no reason that the BEMM must report on each and every one of these.

Remember, the purpose of this doc is to provide basic guidance and cautionary information to people who will pointing a sharp implement at their van or wagon :^). It is not intended to be a legal description or used to comply with local laws.

I did send email to the contact listed in the document for additional clarification, will update this when i learn more.
