Does anyone have Apple CarPlay running yet in a Transit?

http://www.macrumors.com/2015/04/30/ford-exec-apple-carplay-thoughts/

As I understand it, this will be (or recently has become) an option with the new Sync 3 with navigation system on the 6.5" display, with Sync 3 new for 2016 models. The 2016's have gotten into owner hands. But I haven't yet heard if Sync 3 has CarPlay from the get go. Anyone got it? Anyone with Sync 3 but no CarPlay? Or any direct news from dealers etc?

This is what it looks like in another make:

Essentially a built in iPad, sort of, connected to car audio controls on steering wheel, voice activated if you want, with apps customized for driving ... For some folks it'll be an improved user interface.

Carplay is an update to Sync 3 that Ford has not shipped yet. My 2016 Sync 3 does NOT have Carplay.

Good news: it looks like Apple CarPlay (and Android Auto) are coming later this year to 2016 Fords that have SYNC 3. See:

http://www.macrumors.com/2016/01/04/ford-carplay-android-auto-2017-sync-3/

See description of CarPlay above. Will be nice to have.

The article also says: "New 4G LTE SYNC Connect technology will allow drivers to remote start, unlock doors, check fuel levels or locate a parked vehicle via their smartphone." Interesting.

Let's hope Ford follows through with this.

Yes that is the last that I have heard also, the hardware update is believed to be some sort of dongle. My dealer however knows of nothing yet, sure would be nice to have this feature working.

Wonder if this could be an opportunity for Matt Ford -- bulk order them and sell them to forum members, vice dealing with local dealerships who may be clueless to the whole situation.

Ford has announced that its SYNC 3 infotainment system, which includes CarPlay and Android Auto, is now available across its entire 2017 lineup of cars, SUVs, light trucks, and electric vehicles in the United States.

Now, who will be the first to get it going on a 2016 Transit with Sync 3? And how do the rest of us do it? Just a software update or is additional hardware needed?

If Ford were smart, they'd do a phased roll out. Either a random ~15% rollout or a mix of random and targeted (perhaps if they track frequency of update checks, they include more of those systems with high checks). Then, they should wait to see if anyone has major issues. After that, either do groups of 20-25% at a time or just yell YOLO and make it available to all. An interesting variable in all this, is how different is the software/firmware/hardware between various platforms (e.g., a Transit vs. a Fusion)? If there are differences, does Ford have the teams focused on the more 'consumer' driven vehicles platforms (which wouldn't bode well for Transits I think)? Are they focusing on platforms with higher volume of Sync3 installations?

From earlier news articles, Apple devices will require additional hardware, assumed to be a simple dongle as the existing USB ports may not be up to snuff. Since Apple was and Android wasn't explicitly mentioned needing hardware, the assumption is Android users need only get the software update.

My question is in regards to "light trucks". Does this include Transits? I'm about to place an order for a 2017 and don't have a warm and fuzzy that it will.
