Yuck. I ordered the improved upper air box for my 2017 3.5 EB.
A few weeks ago my partner wanted the van for a ladies weekend in Asheville. I thought it would nice to give her a clean van so I took it to the car wash and spent to much money soaping and washing it off for the trip. She called me on the trip and said the van was doing something weird and going into an unsafe limp mode with a wrench icon on. She said it did it to her 3 or 4 times. It's never done this before to us. I bought it used with 55k now has 85k. I had know about the poor water management of the cowls. I had put drain lines in to help mitigate water onto the air box and electrical components. The cowl has gotten worse from the time I put the drain lines in. Now water pours in from numerous other spots. I'm pretty sure now that the limp mode was related to me washing the van. I hit the windshield and cowl area pretty hard so I imagine a lot of water hit the ECM (?) PCM (?). She would pull over real quick, turn the van all the way off and it would start back up without any hesitation or wrench indicator. It has happened since.
After that, I peeked in the air box to see if the air filter was discolored and sure enough it was so I ordered the new upper airbox. I might do a turd as well. Pics of the air filter. Yuk.

gap that lets in Un filtered air is at the Back of air box next to fire wall

I filled Gap with silicone - seems like I put thin plastic wrap over silicon to form a Release area in seal /filter
make sure RTV O2 sensor safe -

5mm gap is more than big enough to let in but loads of dirt -

Turd keeps rain out but not air born dirt -

what I did to fix is on about page 54 ish of thread Air filter nightmare

The soft foam edges of the air filter form the seal. Exterior gaps don't matter, only that the top and bottom housing are compressing the gasket edge enough.
I open and check my air box about once a year and have replaced the filter twice and never seen evidence of water leakage or dust (Arizona red dust gets everywhere} on the clean side of the filter/housing.
I suspect with how easy it is to install top cover wrong that a some of the wet filters are operator error. It is not a universal problem.

easier air cleaner off -

remove screw in washer bottle and rotate top out of the way -

Loosen air hose clamps box top down to turbo or exhaust -
remove airflow tube section set to side - zip tie -
maybe remove sensor plug - not sure
cover turbo/exhaust inlet with paper towel -

my van 2015 the Gap is in the Very back against fire wall -

I filled gap area with a Firm piece of weather stripping foam - 1/4 inch thick
also siliconed in place -

3M aluminum duct tape can be used to form a Ok seal on back -
its hard to do - tried several times - little room -
a cord or wire can be used to Form tape to box - pull tape against box back -

tape seal can work Ok -
i decided to spend time to seal as good as i could -
air filter at 17k looked new -

made a thread about sealing filter box 8 yrs ago
