Hello. Newbie Here I just want to share my experience swapping my 4" to 8"
Just bought a 2021 transit t350 HD and want to have the 8" screen after reading here. Got an ecosport 8" screen at ebay for $220. And a 4 gen APIM FOR $300 with programing. Install the 8 screen but the APIM was taking to long to arrive. So when on a web search and found a website call cyanlab. Which have the 3.4 update for free. Installed on the van. Once the installation was finish. The screen when totally blank. nothing work. I had no Voice command, wifi, ford pass. Did a hard reset to the APIM by pressing power and skip forward and viola everything star to work perfect even did the auto update from ford. So for anybody looking to do this upgrade. On newer fords 2019 and up. There is no need to get APIM.

I could be wrong but I think your Transit needs to have come with Sync3 before this will work.. My 2020 came with a base radio but without Sync and I don't think it has any of the APIM or associated wiring installed..

Yes you're totally right. Mine has sync 3 from factory. Only with that 4" ugly screen

How can you tell that yours has Sync 3 from factory? I assume mine (2021 AWD transit) does but it doesn't list "Sync3" as an option on the dealer sheet.

When I plug in my phone it says "iPhone connected" so I assume that's a good sign that the wiring is there? It also lists "Fordpass connect" which I assume is related to the sync3 module that's installed.

I can pull back the glove box later to check but figured I'd ask. Thanks for the help.

Hello. There. Mine had it listed on sticker. How ever if you go to settings on you radio and see sync app or sync settings. Them you have sync. If you don't have APIM. I did and extensive research with my old transit and it's almost impossible to do and APIM installation. But there are many aftermarket options.

Thanks for replying! I don't see the APIM behind my glove box but I do have the Fordpass connect to Lock/Unlock, Remote start, etc. and the stuff I'm finding online says that those things require sync. I guess I'm just confused why the APIM wouldn't be there.

Is this where yours was located? I guess I'm screwed.... really wishing I'd done more research on this before purchasing the vehicle.

Yes. If you have one it should be to the upper left of the glove box. How ever. On the radio settings you will find sync version and other sync settings. If you have and APIM.

Sorry to badger you with questions but do you know the difference between Basic Sync and Sync 3? It looks like mine is equipped with basic sync, so when I connect my phone I can still use siri and voice controls, but it doesn't appear to have the APIM module behind the glove box. I'd think that "Basic Sync" still requires a module of some kind (since APIM = accessory Interfaxe module and it’s interfacing with my phone....)

there's a silver unit behind the radio. Could this be maybe be the APIM? This makes no sense to me.

It was just as you said for me. Used 2018 Ecosport screen and radio controls, download Cyanlans update, install and then start engine. Boom! 8” touch screen upgrade complete for less than $200!

Success!!!

Thanks to tiredder and Heroll for the threads on this forum.

Started with a 2020 Ford Transit Crew and a 4” display with Sync 3.4.19274. Searched on car-part.com for the 2018 Ecosport radio w/ 8” screen and found one for $78 at a salvage yard near me. Called and was told they did not actually have it, but was with one of their fellow salvage yards a few states from my location. Also, he told me that price can’t be right, those should be around $200. But, he called and they honored the price. Shipping and tax brought it to $115.29. I bought it.

When it arrived, I installed it. Got the expected 4” image in the upper left corner of the 8” display. Used the Cyanlabs Syn3 updater 2.0. Updating took maybe 15 minutes (no maps) and it rebooted to a blank screen. Waited another 15 minutes and still blank. Performed the reset with the power and next buttons. It reset and booted great. Everything works including FordPass.

Thanks agin for everyones updates to these forums.

Thanks to everyone who has posted about this upgrade. I just completed my 8" screen upgrade in my 2020 Transit and made a video detailing the process if it's helpful to anyone else:

Ford Transit Touch Screen Upgrade Video

We upgraded our 2020 Ford Transit's stock 4" Sync head unit to a fully compatible 8" touch screen with Sync 3 for $300 CAD!

Instruction Summary (** Ensure your 2020 or newer Transit has Sync3 from the factory or this will not work)

1. Purchase a Ford Ecosport 8" screen and audio controls on Ebay or local scrapyard. Write down or photograph the Sync version of your current unit.

2. Remove factory 4" screen by removing rear plastic clip and then removing the 3x 7mm hex screws. Unplug the 2 connection clips.

3. Attach 8" screen and new audio controls together and install into your van in the reverse order.

4. Visit www.cyanlabs.net and download the Syn3Updater 2.0

5. Format an install USB and install on the van4. Perform a hard reset to the APIM by pressing power and skip forward buttons simultaneously.

6. Enjoy your fully functional 8" screen!

I wonder if this upgrade would work on a 2022 transit with the base 4" radio with sync 3? Any thoughts?

If it would work, I think it would be a great way to retain manual HVAC controls and have a decent size 8" touch screen... exactly as you would have been able to order it in 2021.

Not sure what to make of this, I def. have "SYNC 3" as a $280 option on my build sheet, but I don't have that multi-dot app looking button, so I don't really have SYNC 3?

Since watching that video, I'm pretty sure I have seen numerous vans with the 8" screen and SYNC 3 that have that square with a line through it, not the dots. So I now have a feeling that isn't a direct clue. Maybe it was just something that seemed to correlate but in actuality doesn't always.

If you have any other indication of SYNC 3 I would go by that.

I'm going to be doing this same conversion if Ford deigns to build me a van.

That gives me hope. It seems the video is the only source for that being a determinant that a van has Sync 3. I'm hoping its inaccurate, but I guess I don't know if it applies unless I try to swap out my van's head unit (since I ordered SYNC 3 and the window sticker verifies it should have SYNC 3 but I don't have that same button).
