This question comes up quite a bit when folks are using our minicell floor insulation kits.

Due to the weight of the plywood and everything on top, the metal floor is not prone to produce resonant noise. So mass loading does not make sense. Minicell is on it's own does a good job isolating the finished floor from chassis vibrations. A better, lighter, less expensive and easy to install noise control solution would be to add the optional layer of Thinsulate TAI noise absorber between the minicell strips in the valleys and the full minicell layer on top.

Then throw a rug on top for added acoustic performance and comfort.

If you are considering adding noise control materials to other areas, take a look at 3M Engineered Damping Material. It is half the weight of Dynamat, Noico, Kilmat, etc.

The metal floor in a van does not remain a resonant structure once the plywood subfloor, cabinets, gear and perhaps an area rug/matt is on top of it. So even though resonance control is effective on a bare metal floor it doesn't make a difference once van is built out and in use.

We have many customers including professional up-fitters who do not continue to apply resonant damping on floors after they start using our minicell floor insulation system. We do offer an optional layer of thin Thinsulate which does increase noise absorption for minimal cost, weight and effort.

Some customers are convinced that resonance control is needed all over their van. So we do stock 3M Engineered Damping Material. We have the 2.9mm thick version which is almost double the thickness and half the weight of most other resonance control products. It's unique structure actually has an airspace so there is a small thermal insulation component as well.

      All the best,

You might consider 3M Engineered Damping Material. It is half the weight of Kilmat, etc. Why is that important? We have seen where heavier noise control products fall off due to adhesive failure. When you put insulation over it the metal skin (especially on dark colored vans) gets very hot. The heat can't escape due to the insulation and so the adhesive holding the noise control product fails and the pieces come loose.

If you plan to use Thinsulate then there really isn't a lot of benefit to installing additional noise control. On floors our Minicell kits do an amazing job at reducing noise and most folks are not going to the trouble to put any sort of noise control down first.

Am I calculating right that this is so much more expensive per square ft its not comparable at all to the other products mentioned in this thread?
      Silless $69/36sqft
      3m product $365/40sqft
